Chesapeake STEM Event at the Reston Museum's Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta
On Saturday August 19, members of the Chesapeake Section held a children's STEM event in conjunction with the Reston Museum's Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta in Reston, VA. While both student and adult teams competed on the water, over 50 children built their own boats from materials including aluminum foil, popsicle sticks, cardboard, drinking straws and tape and then tested them in a container to prove that they floated and to see how much weight they could carry without sinking or capsizing. In many cases, after an initial failed test, they came back with a second improved design.
