Chesapeake Section February 2024 Meeting
The Chesapeake Section had a successful dinner meeting on Thursday, February 22 on Polar Icebreaker Design and Operation with a BBQ buffet, followed by a panel discussion. Commander Phil Baxa of the USCG, an experienced deck officer, explained why the Coast Guard operates icebreakers and what it is like to serve on one based on his service on two different icebreakers. Commander Baxa's presentation was followed by a discussion of the unique technical challenges and design processes that icebreaker design entails by experienced naval architects Mr. Marty Mardiros, Mr. Alex Wyputa, and Mr. Marty Hecker. A lively Q&A session followed, and the panel were presented SNAME glasses as a token of appreciation.
