H-11 Marine CFD

The SNAME Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) panel represents an extended discussion group, collecting diverse expertise from academia, maritime research institution, CFD developers, ship design firms and shipyard design offices, to advance the knowledge of CFD models, solvers and their verification and validation.
The panel goal is to provide a single source continuously updated information site and discussion group for naval architects interested in CFD for design assessment and performance prediction of surface/underwater marine vehicles and offshore structures.

The committee will work towards these main goals:
1.       Create and maintain an updated list of CFD codes with capability of solving ocean engineering and naval architecture problems, together with technical description of the theoretical models and numerical algorithms and reference to relevant scientific articles. Particular attention is devoted to new theoretical/numerical models to address multi-physics multi-scale problems, such as turbulence, multi-phase flows, unsteady fluid structure interaction and time accurate flow solvers
2.       Provide link and updated definition of methods to for uncertainty analysis of CFD simulations with different types of solvers and physical problems
3.       Create a database of CFD validation cases with related experimental results of steady and unsteady hydrodynamics of ships, underwater vehicles, smaller crafts and offshore (floating) structures.  Validation cases include:
- resistance and propulsion
- seakeeping
- maneuvering and controllability
- wave loads and motion response in extreme sea states
- unsteady dynamics phenomena
- offshore structures hydromechanics

Well known cases exist for particular types of ships. These will be listed and consistently arranged with geometry, experimental setup and results easily accessible from a single web page.
SNAME CFD panel committee will prioritize new, less known cases and some cases are designed and developed by the panel itself.
A particular attention is given to sea trials tests and experimental measurement data for full scale validation of CFD simulation results

4.       List and provide link to principal R&D groups active in the development and application of CFD calculations of marine field, subdivided in academic, research institution, developers and expert-users categories.
