Member Spotlight - Mimosa Miller

Mimosa joined bp as low carbon and sustainability advisor at bp Trade & Shipping in February 2023. Prior to that, Mimosa worked at the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), where she was a program lead on contracted research and development for the Global Government Services and a senior engineer at ABS Technology.

 

In her previous role as program lead, Mimosa was leading the development and execution of various research projects and supporting business development efforts with key partners. She led and supported several industry initiatives such as Green Shipping Corridors and Hydrogen Hubs. Prior to her role as program lead, she completed a six-month secondment to the Blue-Sky Maritime Coalition as acting Project Director to facilitate coalition projects.

 

Mimosa started her career in 2016 in ABS Technology and has experience with hydrodynamic analysis, mooring, and dynamic positioning. Her recent focus has been on sustainability-related subjects including emission control, alternative fuels, and carbon capture. She has championed many research projects in diverse fields and authored several publications on sustainability topics.

Mimosa has served as a member of the IACS Safe Decarbonization Panel to address various safety topics on decarbonization applications.

Outside of work, Mimosa is an active member at the Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineer (SNAME). She has held various positions in the SNAME Texas Section including Section Chair. Currently, she serves as Junior Regional Vice President for the Gulf and Central region and as an active member for the Offshore Technology Conference SNAME subcommittee.

Mimosa graduated from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art with a B.E. in Civil Engineering and Texas A&M University with a M.E. in Ocean Engineering.

 

Questions:

1) At what point in your career did you join SNAME?

I joined SNAME in 2016, when I first started working at ABS.

 

2) How has SNAME membership been of value to you in your career?

Being a SNAME member has provided me many benefits and opportunities. I met a lot of my friends through SNAME, enhanced my professional experience and exercised leadership skills through various volunteer roles within the section.

 

3) When did you know you wanted to pursue a job in the maritime field?

In my sophomore year in undergraduate school. I had an internship in an offshore company that designs offshore living quarters, which intrigued me and encouraged me to pursue a career in the marine and offshore industry.

 

4) What advice would you give to those entering the maritime field?

The maritime industry is going through an energy transition, be prepared to face an accelerated industry with fast-paced changes and never stop learning. Be curious!

 

5) What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy reading and watching science fiction, visiting friends and family, and spending quality time with my cats.

 

6) What is your favorite book, movie or tv series?

It was recently recommended to me by a friend, “The New Map” by Daniel Yergin. It illustrates a fascinating landscape for world energy and geopolitics.

 

“The Expanse” is my favorite TV show, highly recommended.

 

7) What is a fun fact about yourself?!

I attended 10 different schools from elementary to graduate school.
