Description
This conference considers how far, and how fast, the decarbonisation debate is moving from discussion to action, as shipping enters a critical decade of transition. Society is becoming acutely aware of the resource limitations of our planet. The state and private sector have recognised that to survive and prosper, sustainability and environmental stewardship need to be at the top of everyone’s agenda, and there can be no disputing the shipping industry’s importance with approximately 90% of the worlds goods being moved by sea. In fact, the world fleet has increased 70% in the past decade - from 750 million GT in 2008 to 1.23 billion GT in 2019. Against this backdrop of scale and growth, in April 2018 the International Maritime Organization laid out its goal that shipping must cut its greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions by 50% by 2050. Given the enormity of this target, this landmark decision was a defining point for the shipping industry and one that requires significant change as zero-emission vessels must become part of the world fleet before the end of the next decade. This has opened a raft of new challenges as achieving this ambition will require industry players to work together, not only with their current industry partners but with fuel and propulsion technology companies, equipment manufacturers and energy developers from different sectors, so we can develop, prove, scale and commercialise zero-emission vessels.
