GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATION OF IMO 1992 RULES FOR PROBABILISTIC DAMAGE STABILITY FOR DRY CARGO SHIPS

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers has published the technical bulletin Guidelines for Application of IMO 1992 Rules for Probabilistic Damage Stability for Dry Cargo Ships.

IMO Resolution MSC.19(58), "Regulations for the Damage Stability Requirements of Dry Cargo Ships" became effective on February 1, 1992, as an amendment to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS). These regulations consider the probability of various extents of damage occurring anywhere along the length of the ship, and the probability that the ship will survive the damage. The probabilistic approach of the regulations provides a means to assess and compare the relative safety of ships, where damage flooding is concerned. This bulletin is a practical guide to the use of these regulations. An appendix with two worked examples is included. The bulletin is not a stand-alone document, but must be used in conjunction with the regulations.

The new publication is identified as Technical and Research Bulletin 7-9. It is a 60-page report issued as a CD. It may be ordered through the SNAME web site (www.sname.org) or by contacting Claudio Pujols (cpujols@sname.org or 201-798-4800, x-3044) for $50 ($25 for SNAME members).
