HULLFORMS FOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE FERRIES

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers has published the technical report Alternative Hullforms for High-Performance Ferries.

Recent years have seen rapid growth in the high-performance ferry sector, driven by a desire to provide faster, more comfortable, and safer transportation of passengers and cars. This report examines the hullforms available for these high-performance ferries, including planing monohulls, catamarans and other multihull vessels, small-waterplane vessels, hydrofoils, hovercraft, air-cushion vehicles, surface-effect ships, WIGs, and channel-flow-wing craft. For each type, attributes and issues are cited, and tables of principal characteristics and photographs of examples are provided.

The SNAME report is identified as Technical and Research Report R-51. The 35-page report, with 22 illustrations, is being issued as a compact disk, and may be ordered through the SNAME web site (www.sname.org) or by contacting Claudio Pujols (cpujols@sname.org or 201-798-4800, x-3044) for $30 ($15 for SNAME members).
