INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SMALL CRAFT/YACHT DESIGN COMPETITION

TYPICAL DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

LUXURY MOTOR YACHT

INTRODUCTION

A wealthy real estate developer has just contracted with you to design him a luxury yacht.  Price is not the major consideration, however he expects you to provide a cost estimate to assist in his negotiation with potential shipyards.

The yacht is to be able to take limited oceanic transit voyages (extra portable fuel tanks would be carried for this).

The owner desires a modernistic looking yacht rather than the run of the mill squat style.  Its looks should project modern and fast.

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

The yacht shall be capable of a voyage up to 1000 miles at 20 knots without fueling.  Provisions and stores shall be for 14 day voyages.

The yacht will be designed and built to classification rules (ABS or Lloyds).

It should meet any applicable USCG regulations.

The yacht will be registered in Bermuda.

The overall length of the yacht shall be between 100 and 110 feet.

Maximum speed (1/2 load) shall be 35 knots and cruise speed (full load) shall be 20 knots.

Maximum hull draft is 5 feet.

Accommodation shall be provided for 8 people including the owner in double staterooms and for 4 crew in single cabins.  Two of the crew cabins will have ability to sleep two people in two-tier berths.  Both an enclosed lounge and dining salon such be provided with the lounge opening onto an open deck space of equal area to the lounge.  All this should be integrated into a pleasant layout using space efficiently and for easy service by the crew for the passengers.

The owner wants a hot tub for 6 people to be located on the aft deck.

Electrical power shall be provided by 2 generators each sized to meet all anticipated operating loads.

A built in swim platform shall be incorporated into the aft end/transom with steps on both sides to the main deck.

The owner would prefer a small boat hanger in the transom to handle a 12 ft RIB and 2 Ski Doos, but they must not interfere with the swim platform.

A water maker shall be provided but fresh water tankage shall be enough for 2 days usage.

A bow thruster will be provided to assist in docking maneuvers.

The yacht will be fully air-conditioned.

Construction material is up to the designers, but whatever is selected must be able to have a high quality yacht finish and easily cleaned/maintained.

Electronic suite shall include high class entertainment system, security system, 2 VHF radios, 1 cellular system, digital PBX, DPM system, 2 radars, chart plotter, depth sounder, and an integrated machinery control system.

A type II MSD sanitation system shall be provided.

The owner would like to be able to completely walk around the outside of the yacht on the main deck level.
