eGroups Help

Q: What are eGroups?
A: eGroups are online message boards, designed to send the same message to all members of the community. eGroup messages can have attachments, all of which become documents in that Community’s Library. eGroups are restricted to community members. Only members of a community can access the eGroup of that community. If you are not a member of the Arctic Section, for example, you will not be able to see or contribute to Arctic Section eGroup postings.

Q: Where can I access eGroups?
A: You can access eGroups on any page of SNAME.org through the main navigation bar: look for eGroups. Click on it directly to access the eGroups landing page, or hover your cursor over it to expose the secondary navigation. You can also access all your eGroups through your profile page. They will be listed under your picture.

Q: What do I need to do to post and read eGroup messages?
A: All Section eGroup messages are delivered to all section members in real time. Members of Committees and Panels now receive postings to their Committee and Panel eGroups via email once a day in a daily digest by default. Members can manage how they see eGroup postings through the My EGroup Subscriptions link under “eGroups” on the main navigation.  You will also be prompted to subscribe when accessing an eGroup for the first time. Post to an eGroup through the Post Message link under “eGroups” as well.

Q: Can I create my own eGroups?
Yes! All members can create new Communities, and all Communities can have dedicated eGroups. To create an eGroup and a Community, click on “Communities” in the login area at top-right, and then look for the big green plus-sign. Click on “Create a New Community.” Name your new Community, and select “Member Created Group.” Then, it is up to you to recruit members. Invite your contacts to participate in your new Community and eGroup.
