Competition Overview

The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers sponsor The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust Americas Maritime Technology Student of the Year Award. This award is designed to highlight excellence, while encouraging students to showcase their research and investigative studies on various topics in the areas of naval architecture and marine and ocean engineering and promote leadership in the industry.  See the circular for full details. 

The competition is open to undergraduates at academic institutions throughout the US, Canada, South America and Latin America that offer programs in naval architecture, marine and ocean engineering. A cash award is given to the first and second place winners, who are selected by a judging panel of industry experts.

Cash prizes are awarded to the competition winner and the runner up with an accompanying award for their faculty advisors. The prize for first place is $3,500 (faculty advisor award $500). The prize for second place is $1,500 (faculty advisor award $250). The cash award is unrestricted. The winner may use it for any purpose he or she chooses.

SNAME requires all participants to be student members of SNAME in good standing. Participants should develop a paper, based on the theme describing how their project benefits the maritime industry. Participants must submit papers in electronic format to the SNAME program facilitator.

The 2009-2010 theme is: “A green ship or green system for safe operation in the ice and cold environment.”

  • Declaration of interest: December 1, 2009.
  • Deadline for submission of entries: March 31, 2010.
  • Finalists invited to SNAME Headquarters in Jersey City, NJ to present to judges: June 2010
  • Awards presented at the 2010 SNAME Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA at the President’s Luncheon: November 2010.
