Chair Andrew Davis Andy is the president of Tri-Coastal Marine, which is a small firm that primarily designs, but also builds large wooden sailing vessels. Andy studied naval architecture at University of California at Berkeley, receiving a BS (1989) and an MS (1991) just before he turned forty. Prior to studying engineering, he worked for twelve years as a boat builder. He is a US Coast Guard-licensed captain and operates passenger ferries in San Francisco Bay for the Blue & Gold Fleet. He continues to work as an assistant in the Computational Marine Mechanics Lab at UC Berkeley under Prof. Ronald Yeung. Prior to this job he served as crewman aboard the KAIULANI, an 86ft schooner; as shipwright and naval architect on the build of the KALMAR NYCKEL, a reproduction of a 93 foot Dutch Pinnace; and as a naval architect at Electric Boat, the submarine division of General Dynamics. Joel received a B.S. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute in 1994. Yeung Ronald is a Professor of Distinguished Rank at the University of California at Berkeley, holding faculty appointments in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Ocean Engineering Graduate Group. A Fellow of SNAME, he has over 30 years of industry, teaching, and research experience in the marine areas, and has supervised more than sixty PhD and Master graduates. Professor Yeung is the recipient of the Georg Weinblum Lecturership Award 2002-03 and the SNAME 2004 Davidson Medal. His teaching and research interests are in fluid mechanics, ship mechanics, computational methodologies, and ocean engineering. Prior to that he worked at Morris Guralnick Associates on a wide variety of marine projects and as Naval Architect at Maryland Shipbuilding and Drydock and Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, San Francisco. He holds a degree from the University of Michigan, and is a section past chairman of SNAME.
