Massachusetts Institute of Technology - 13Seas, MIT’s Ocean Engineering student association, started off the school year with an event at Boston’s T-party. This orientation event gave student groups a chance to interact with freshmen. 13Seas attracted the students by hosting a “pirate ship design competition.” Using basic materials, participants constructed pirate ships, which were float tested to see if they could hold one treasure chest (which was the reward for a successful float test.) Many unique designs, ranging from the practical to the elaborate, were created and many happy designers quickly captured our supply of treasure. Read more ...

University of British Columbia - The fall was a very busy semester for the students at UBC; we were proud to host the October SNAME PNW Technical Meeting, travel to the 2006 SMTC&E and present cutting edge naval architecture/ocean energy research to the engineering community on campus. In addition, UBC is also proud to be the home of the champion Sailboat from the inaugural competition at Queen’s University. Read more ...

University of British Columbia Sailbot Team - The weekend of June 3rd and 4th presented a great challenge to three autonomous sailboat teams from Queen’s, UBC and Waterloo. Queen’s University hosted a three-part competition to test the hard work of the three teams. The first part of the competition involved completing a navigation test, where the vessel is to autonomously navigate upwind, approximately 20 meters, round a buoy and return through the starting gate. The second leg of the competition is a match race, where each team controls the rudder of their vessel. The final portion of the competition is a presentation where the teams present their design to a panel of judges. Read more ...

University of Michigan - The University of Michigan SNAME Student Section, otherwise known as Quarterdeck, has been extremely involved in activities associated with our professional society and the University this semester. Due to the generosity of alumni and faculty, seventeen students attended the SNAME Annual Conference in Fort Lauderdale from October 11th to the 14th. At the conference students were able to attend technical presentations, alumni networking events, and participate in student activities with students from other student sections. The trip was concluded with a tour of the Miami Coast Guard Maintenance facilities, orchestrated by Jeff Payne, a graduate student at the University of Michigan, who works at this facility. This was an amazing opportunity to have hands-on experience and actually see the application of what is taught in the classroom. Read more ...
