On May 15, 2004, SNAME’s PNW Section held a technical meeting in North Vancouver, BC. There were 29 attendees, mostly members from Vancouver, BC, but also represented were professionals from the Seattle, WA area. The group enjoyed hearing three excellent presentations from Mr. Kenneth Harford, Mr. David Gray and Mr. John Fowlis. After the presentations, and a delicious lunch, the group enjoyed a detailed tour on board the tug Seaspan Venture.

Mr. Kenneth Harford from Robert Allan Ltd. presented a paper on towboat noise control, detailing the history behind noise control in towboats, the present developments and future trends in the field. Mr. Harford’s paper covered engine vibration, engine room systems, propeller vibration, acoustics and deckhead linings. A working model, demonstrating noise transmission and noise control, also accompanied Mr. Harford’s presentation.

presentation covered the different factors affecting risk, analysis of historical data and full scale drifting trials on the general cargo/container ship M/S Westwood Victoria.

The final presentation was from Mr. John Fowlis of the Washington Marine Group, on the topic of Incorporating the User Into the Design Spiral. This unique presentation described the recent design project of a river tug, where the operator’s input was established from early on in the design spiral. The presentation covered operator input in all aspects of the design: design philosophy, stability, strength as well as vessel layout and maneuverability. The final result was the Seaspan Venture: a very strong vessel with a practical deck arrangement, ergonomic wheelhouse, and good visibility from the controls.
