Pacific
Northwest Section A three-person team from the Ballard Maritime Academy (an organization within the Ballard High School) was sponsored by SNAME Pacific Northwest Section to participate in the Quick & Dirty Boatbuilding Competition at the 2004 Maritime Festival in Seattle, WA, on Saturday, May 8, 2004. The Pacific Northwest Section, contacted several local schools and colleges and offered to pay the $50 registration fee, to render technical assistance in the design and construction, and to help oversee the safe use of the power tools during the contest.
Each team was supplied with 4 sheets of 1/4" x 4' x 8' ACX plywood, 6 pieces of 2" x 4" x 8' nominal lumber, 200 pieces of 1" #8 flat head wood screws, and 2 tubes of quick-drying caulk. In addition, a “surprise” material was provided which had to be incorporated into the vessel. Each team was allowed to spend up to $15 (before sales tax) on additional materials. The construction was to be completed in 6 hours. A race followed with all team members in the boats. Oars, paddles, etc. were to be made of the material provided or included in the $15 limit on additional materials. The “surprise” material turned out to be a 25’ long garden hose. The Ballard Maritime Academy team, consisting of two male and one female students, (names unavailable at the press release time),designed the vessel and produced full size templates for the construction work. They successfully completed their vessel and participated in the race. The garden hose was used as fendering around the bow. Although their vessel did not win

the race, it won the “Judge’s Choice” award. Mr. John Anthony Fahy, a fellow member of the PNW Section, volunteered for a safety watch with the Ballard Maritime Academy team during the competition.
Next to the construction booths SNAME PNW had a display area to showcase recent innovations in the ship design process. Mr. Alan Winkley, a fellow member of the PNW Section, displayed a set of lines plans for a fishing vessel, a spline and lead ducks as well as printouts of computer-generated lines plans. He entertained questions from the public throughout the event. Among the six entries to the boatbuilding contest, SNAME PNW members made up the bulk of at least three teams (Elliott Bay Design Group, Glosten Associates and Jensen Maritime Consultants Inc.) The Glosten Associates won the race and Jensen Maritime won the “People’s Choice” award. The other two teams were Vessel Management Services (Crowley) and the Pacific Maritime Magazine.
