Section Operation of Ships in Cold Climates with Emphasis on Tankers and the New Requirements On January 22, 2004, sixty members and students braved the unusual weather for Athens, consisting of very low temperatures and snow fall, and attended the technical presentation by Mr. Wilhelm Magelssen, Vice President of Det Norske Veritas Maritime,Norway, on a subject fitting to the weather, entitled “Operation of Ships in Cold Climates with Emphasis on Tankers and the New Requirements" The subject was of current interest since more new buildings are being constructed to various ice strengthened notations, and because of increased oil trading in ice-infested waters in the Baltic (Kara Sea)and SakhalinRussia has increased its oil production, and exports from those areas are expected to increase. The
paper covered the Baltic Rules highlighting
Interesting questions and answers followed the lecture. It should be noted that the author distributed a 26-page report with valuable photos, figures and tables. Prior to the reception, the Chairman of the Section cut the New Year’s cake (Vasilopita) with the gold coin for all members present and visitors. The lucky person was a visitor, a young naval architect, who promised to join SNAME soon.
