USCG Response Boat – Medium (RB-M) Acquisition Project

On January 11, 2006, members of the SNAME Northern California Section and ASNE Golden Gate Section gathered for a joint meeting at the Pasta Pelican Restaurant in Alameda, CA. Following an enjoyable social hour and dinner, Master Chief Timothy Urban of the U.S. Coast Guard Response Boat Acquisition Division (G-ARB), provided an overview of the Coast Guard Response Boat – Medium (RB-M) Acquisition Project. The RB-M Project is an effort to re-capitalize the capability of the existing multi-mission 41’ Utility Boats (UTB) and a small number of larger, non-standard boats that have replaced 41’ UTBs removed from service. The 41’ UTB is reaching the end of its service life with engine and hull integrity issues heading a significant problem list. The primary function of the RB-M project is to provide a boat that meets the current and projected multi-mission demand in the coastal environment. The project is expected to acquire approximately 180 boats and the logistics infrastructure necessary to support them. The RB-M Group works closely with the 47’ Motor Lifeboat (117 boats) and Small Response Boat Groups (expected to consist of 350 boats) to provide an outstanding mix of modern efficient boats for the USCG.

The SNAME New York Metropolitan Section held a joint meeting with the Institute of Marine Engineers, Science and Technology (IMarEST), the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) and the Society of Marine Port Engineers (SMPE) in New York City on 17 January 2006.

The speaker, Richard Thornton, chairman of MagneMotion, Inc. spoke about linear synchronous motors and their applications to material handling in the marine environment. Comparisons were offered with respect to belt or cable conveyor systems and examples were offered covering applications such as vertical lift, rapid movement, precision placement and large loads.

The presentation, like most of the recent presentations at the NY Met, is accredited for PE Continuing credit.
