From the 2007 SMTC&E/SPS
in Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Student Program and Awards:

I would like to extend my gratitude for SNAME’s continued support of students, which I realized again at the 2007 SMTC&E. There, I was recognized as a student paper award winner for my Webb senior thesis. I am honored to have been asked to present it, and I greatly appreciate the accompanying award.

This recognition was yet another opportunity made available to me as a student to benefit from SNAME’s generosity, as I have also received several scholarships from SNAME for which I remain grateful.

My “career” began just a few years ago when I started at Webb. I then attended MIT for graduate school, and recently began working with SeaRiver Maritime (ExxonMobil affiliate) in Houston. SNAME has been a part of my professional life at each step so far, and I plan to maintain my membership and activity in the organization.

Brgds,
Peter Bryn

Shipbuilding Panel:

“The information presented by panel members and the questions raised by the audience were current and relevant to concerns over the competitiveness of American shipyards. Many of the major recommendations made (including – don’t begin production until your design is complete) need to be taken seriously if we are to build affordable ships for the future fleet of the Navy. Applying modularity where design changes occur frequently (e.g. Combat Systems on warships) can help finalize the ship design earlier (through use of module interface standards) and provide a solid platform baseline for construction.

The Cruising Woman's Advisor
by Diana Jessie

forwards by Tania Aebi and Lin Pardey

The cruising life offers adventure, exotic destinations, and expansive opportunities for personal growth. But considering such a life leads to vexing questions: What do I need to learn? What do I do if my partner falls overboard? How will our relationship be tested at sea? Let longtime cruiser and circumnavigator Diana Jessie start you on the journey of a lifetime with her advice on short-term cruising or long-term voyaging. She addresses the concerns of women cruisers, including:

  • Cruising roles and relationships
  • What life at sea is really like
  • Children on board
  • How to make the boat your home as well as his
  • Identifying the dangers and putting them into perspective . . . and more

Plan for smooth cruising with advice from Sally Bee Brown, a contributing editor to PassageMaker magazine; Carol Cuddyer, cofounder of Sea Sense, a sailing and powerboating school for women; Dawn Riley, noted America’s Cup and Whitbread sailor; Patience Wales, two-time circumnavigator and editor emeritus of SAIL; and thirty other cruisers. This updated edition also contains information on powerboating (including choosing between power and sail), cruising with pets, and satellite communication.

Reviewed in October issue of Marine Technology

“A little gem . . . packed with useful information.”--Sailing

“Every woman who intends to step on board for more than a day sail should read Jessie’s book.”--The Log
