Did You Miss Us?

We were in Ft. Lauderdale attending the 2007 SMTC&E/SPS and there was no time to create the
Mid-November issue of the SNAMeNewsLetter. However, we did find the time to send a
special e-Postcard to our members.

What You Missed at the 2007 SMTC&E (Annual Meeting) . . .

"The three courses that were offered by SNAME were a great deal at the member price of $175.  Where else can you get a full day seminar, especially in a technical field, for that price?  The Sailing Yacht class was fantastic and well worth the extra day to attend.  I hope to see future SNAME continue to offer these options."

“Ft. Lauderdale’s Finishing Flourish”
(Impressions of the SMTC&E/SPS November 14-16, 2006)

(excerpts from Phil Kimball's "View from the Helm", January 2008 Marine Technology)

The Society’s 2007 SNAME Maritime Technology Conference & Exposition and Ship Production Symposium (SMTC&E/SPS) was held again for the second year in Ft. Lauderdale convenient to all types and sizes of recreational water craft, power and sailing yachts, cruise ships and ocean-going commercial vessels. Our host hotel, the Hyatt Regency Pier 66, was just over the bridge and on the other side of the Intracoastal Waterway, but still very near the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center, where the technical program, the Cruise Ship and Shipbuilding Panels, numerous committee meetings and the Exposition were located.

The President’s Reception
The President’s Reception held in the Expo Hall ..... to the delight of exhibitors while affording expanded socializing and networking opportunities with friends and colleagues... student attendance 201 from colleges and universities located all over the Americas and Europe.

The Technical Program
The technical program .....13 papers on hydrodynamics, ship design, structure, propulsion and operations, and the ever-popular Ship Production Symposium with 13, production-oriented papers ..... Cruise Ship and Shipbuilding panels, two T&R presentations, three student papers and a student technical poster session. Most technical papers and courses were accredited for those requiring continuing education credits.

Look for your January issue of Marine Technology for the complete story.

The Plenary Sessions were a HUGH Success! Thank you to moderators VADM James C. Card, USCG (Ret.). and Bruce Rosenblatt, President, ROH Inc, and all of our distinguished panelists.

"The Cruise Ship Panel at the SMTC&E provided a variety of complementary perspectives from across this dynamic and growing maritime industry. Given the sinking of the M/V Explorer in Antarctic waters only eight days later, and the rescue of all passengers and crew to the M/V Nordnorge, the observations by ADM James Watson, USCG of the U.S. Coast Guard regarding the challenges of cruise operations to remote, hostile destinations, far from SAR services, and the possible value of pairing cruise ships for such voyages, was virtually prophetic."

The board's web site will provide access to applications, state laws, regulations, dates, and related information.

The registration fee (tuition) for the 2007 and 2008 PERC is still $500 for SNAME members and $750 for non-members. The PERC is planned to start on Monday, January 7 and be completed by Wednesday, March 26, after which a Sample Exam and Solutions will be given for registrants to practice their knowledge and skills. Register on line, or by email to belmore@sname.org, or by telephoning Brenda Elmore-Feliciano at SNAME Headquarters, at 201-499-5067.

The 2008 NAME Principles and Practice exam is scheduled for Friday, April 11, 2008. The 2008 exam will be based upon the revised exam specification developed on the basis of the 2005 industry survey. The 2008 PERC will be updated to reflect the revised specification.

You've got an offer that looks perfect—at least on paper. But how can you know if it really fits YOU?
Here's a checklist that job coaching experts developed to help you decide:

  • Consider the "employee-friendly" benefits—tuition assistance, options for telecommuting or job sharing, casual days—that add to workplace quality of life.
  • Solicit opinions from people you trust who know the organization and know YOU.
  • Determine how much the organization's "vibe" aligns with yours. For instance, will your off-the-wall ties or high-fashion footwear get raised eyebrows or raves?
  • See how well the job responsibilities match with what you actually like to do. (And will it matter that you'll have to drive three hours each day to do it?)
  • Consider if the salary is adequate (and if not, what you'll have to cut to make ends meet).
  • Decide if this job can take you professionally where you truly want to go.

This checklist should help when you get your next job offer—but first you'll have to get the job! See what's available in your field now - click here.

The Cruising Woman's Advisor
by Diana Jessie

forwards by Tania Aebi and Lin Pardey

The cruising life offers adventure, exotic destinations, and expansive opportunities for personal growth. But considering such a life leads to vexing questions: What do I need to learn? What do I do if my partner falls overboard? How will our relationship be tested at sea? Let longtime cruiser and circumnavigator Diana Jessie start you on the journey of a lifetime with her advice on short-term cruising or long-term voyaging. She addresses the concerns of women cruisers, including:

  • Cruising roles and relationships
  • What life at sea is really like
  • Children on board
  • How to make the boat your home as well as his
  • Identifying the dangers and putting them into perspective . . . and more

Plan for smooth cruising with advice from Sally Bee Brown, a contributing editor to PassageMaker magazine; Carol Cuddyer, cofounder of Sea Sense, a sailing and powerboating school for women; Dawn Riley, noted America’s Cup and Whitbread sailor; Patience Wales, two-time circumnavigator and editor emeritus of SAIL; and thirty other cruisers. This updated edition also contains information on powerboating (including choosing between power and sail), cruising with pets, and satellite communication.

Reviewed in October issue of Marine Technology

Stability and Safety of Ships, Volume II: Risk of Capsizing
by: V.L. Belenky & N.B Sevastianov

This book deals with the many modern approaches to analyze ship dynamic stability and capsizing. This book will do much to raise the level of understanding of ship dynamic stability research to that of hydrodynamics and structures, and paves the way to consideration of ship stability safety as one aspect of the up-and-coming discipline of nonlinear dynamics of ships.

Call for Plimsoll Award Nominations

Professional Mariner invites you to nominate candidates for the Samuel Plimsoll Awards

Each year Professional Mariner presents awards to individuals and organizations that embody the spirit of Samuel Plimsoll by making outstanding contributions to safety in the maritime industry.

Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898) was a member of Parliament in Britain who fought against unsafe maritime practices, specifically the overloading of ships. His efforts led to passage of the Unseaworthy Ships Bill in 1876, which required ships to have marks indicating safe load lines. The Plimsoll load lines to be seen on ships to this day are the result of his unstinting efforts to raise safety standards for mariners.

Plimsolls are awarded in three categories:

  • Outstanding service by an individual
  • Outstanding service by an organization
  • Innovative product or service

The awards will be presented at the Connecticut Maritime Association's Shipping 2008 conference on March 18, in Stamford, Conn.

Deadline for nominations is Jan. 1, 2008. Nominations should be submitted by email to: editors@professionalmariner.com.

For further information about submitting nominations, including the criteria by which nominations will be judged, go to the Plimsoll section of the Professional Mariner website.
