Scholarships in both the graduate and undergraduate levels are again being provided by The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers to encourage men and women to pursue studies in the naval architectural, marine engineering, ocean engineering or closely related fields. Scholarships are available to any student regardless of nationality, though distribution of funds to non-U.S. or Canadian citizens is limited to the relative proportion of SNAME membership represented by non-U.S. or Canadian citizens (currently about 23 percent). Applicants must be SNAME members, and preference is given to applicants planning to study in U.S. or Canadian schools. In special cases, U.S. or Canadian scholarship recipients can study at fully accredited international schools. Read more ...

See What's New in SNAME Publications!

Now Available - updated version of Naval Architecture for Non-Naval Architects and the new Environmental Engineering Papers CD. To order contact Tommie-Anne Faix at tfaix@sname.org. Make sure to mention you are a member for special pricing!

This book is written for a broad readership, namely those people whose work or play brings them into contact with boats or ships, but who are not themselves professional naval architects. Even those who are merely curious about the fascinating mysteries of ships and the sea may find this book worth reading.

Young people who may be considering a career as a naval architect or marine engineer should find this book of particular value and interest as a means of testing the intellectual waters.

Finally, and perhaps above all others, this book may prove a blessing to those patient souls, the spouses of professional naval architects. With what they can learn here they need no longer stand around in mystified silence during social gatherings of the maritime clan.

Written in engaging and easily understood terms, this is everyman’s (and everywoman’s!) guide to the fascinating subject of naval architecture.

The American Society of Naval Engineers and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers are proud to announce the release of a comprehensive source of marine environmental technical papers. The publication contains over 260 papers on one compact disc encompassing almost every aspect of marine environmental protection and environmental engineering.

The Joint ASNE/SNAME Committee on Environmental Engineering undertook a review of ASNE and SNAME associated publications since 1984, and selected those that in their judgment and experience would be most helpful in their professional endeavors. The intent was to provide both historical perspective as well as cutting edge technology and processes in use today.

The CD was compiled at SNAME headquarters. The technical documents are saved in PDF format and searchable by title, author(s), source publication, and date. Additionally, the table of contents is divided into the following fourteen subject categories: ANS/Ballast Water, Cargo/Bunker Oil Spill/Outfall Prevention/Cleanup, Coatings/Blasting, Energy Efficiency, Engine Emissions, General Environmental Interest, Graywater/Blackwater, Human Health and Environment, ODS and Atmosphere, Oil and Oily Waste, Pollution Prevention/Hazardous Materials, Regulation/EMS/Design/Program Management, Scrapping, Solid Waste/Thermal Destruction.

Katrina Victim Support

So far we have been able to help a couple of our members recover some of their professional library losses resulting from Hurricane Katrina, but there are more needs to satisfy. As we enter the holiday season, it would be much appreciated by our Katrina victim members if more help were offered. Contribution of professional references or the contribution of funds to help them repurchase such materials would surely be appreciated by those members who were so abused by the storms.

If you wish to make a contribution, email Walt Maclean at wmaclean@sname.org and he will try to make a match-up with a needy member.

PE Update

The Professional Engineer Review Course (PERC) for the 2007 exam is up and running on the www.SNAMeLearning.org site and several registrants are already starting their preparation. For those who have not yet made application to their state board, it is timely to do so as some deadlines for making application have already passed and others are in the near future. In order to make contact with your state board, go to www.ncees.org click on Licensing boards and then the state of your interest. This will then display the state board's web page with email address, web site, telephone and Fax number, etc. Going to the web site will provide access to applications, state laws and regulations and related information.

The registration fee for the 2007 PERC is still $500 for SNAME members and $750 for non-members. Registration can be done online or by email to rmouk@sname.org. Telephone registration can also be taken care of by calling Richard Mouk (201) 499-5063 at SNAME Headquarters. The next NAME Principles and Practice exam is scheduled Friday, April 20, 2007.

Keep watching the P.E. Update column for the latest information as it becomes available. If there are special questions needing to be answered, email Walter Maclean at wmaclean@sname.org or Dave Chapman at dchapman@sname.org. You will receive a reply as promptly as possible.

Over 100 certificates for PE Professional Development Hours earned at SMTC&E/SPS 2006 have been issued to SNAME members. If you applied for credit you should have received your certificates by now. If so, please confirm receipt as instructed in the cover e-mail message. If you applied but did not receive your certificates please contact Alan Rowen at arowen@sname.org.
