Search for the Bonhomme Richard,
Flagship of John Paul Jones

|
Few
ships of the Revolutionary War hold such a high degree of historic significance
as Bonhomme Richard. It was captained by John Paul Jones, who is often
considered the Father of the U.S. Navy. The Bonhomme Richard had been
lent to the U.S. by France and was named in honor of Jones' friend Benjamin
Franklin, who at that time represented America in France and was instrumental
in acquiring the ship. On September 23, 1779, Jones engaged H.M.S. Serapis
in one of the most significant events in U.S. Naval History. It was during
this three and a half hour battle, most of it taking place at point-blank
range, that Jones shouted his legendary words, “I have not yet begun
to fight!” Ultimately, he emerged victorious and took control of
Serapis. Bonhomme Richard had served him well but was damaged and 36 hours later, Jones
watched the ship disappear beneath the waters of the North Sea.
The
Ocean Technology Foundation
(OTF) is spearheading an expedition to the North Sea in the summer of
2006 to search for the remains of the Bonhomme Richard. Read

Maritime Academy - Hello from the West Coast! Our executive
board had an excellent time in Houston. We truly enjoyed meeting with our
fellow students, especially the cadets from SUNY and our old friends from
UNO. The student program was wonderful and we consider the Student Summit
to be the highlight of the conference. We came away from the Summit very motivated
and are going to be implementing some new ideas to boost our membership in
the spring. Read more

University
of New Orleans - The SNAME Student Section of the University
of New Orleans would first like to congratulate Justin Lorio and Chris Robin
on their graduation this December. In the wake of Katrina, UNO students and
professors have been scattered to different schools throughout the country,
including University of Michigan, Texas A&M Galveston, SUNY, University
of Houston and many others. While scattered around the country, we are not
able to have the normal meetings and are trying to communicate by e-mail.
Thanks to the generous donations of SNAME members, seven UNO students were
able to attend the SNAME convention in Houston. We look forward to getting
home and starting our UNO classes on campus in the spring and restarting our
SNAME meetings. We would like to thank all other students, schools and members
for all of their help and support as we are working through this uncertain
time.
Virginia
Tech - The VT SNAME chapter has started off with a great and
exciting year. We have happily entertained six speakers from industry thus
far and returned successfully after a worthy conference in Houston. Congratulations
to Carrie Gonsoulin on her election as Student Steering Committee Secretary/Treasurer.
VT appreciates the extra effort SNAME is putting into the students this year.
From job opportunities to help on senior design projects, SNAME has been an
important part of the education process at Virginia Tech. Read
