Member Benefit Update
SNAME Members’ Insurance Program

Featured Product: Group Term Life Insurance

Life Insurance is not something you buy once and forget about. If you’re like most people, your life insurance needs change throughout your lifetime. Major life events such as getting married, buying a home, starting a family and planning for retirement are good times to reassess your life insurance needs, and if necessary, to upgrade your coverage.

Many experts recommend that you have as much as ten times your annual income in life insurance protection. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers is proud to offer its members and their spouses, who are under age 70, the opportunity to apply for up to $660,000 of Group Term Life Insurance underwritten by New York Life Insurance Company. Term Life Insurance is designed to provide significant protection for your premium dollar.

You can’t predict the future, but you can plan for it.
Nothing can replace the loss of a loved one, but carefully chosen life insurance coverage can help ease the financial strain and provide the funds your spouse and dependents need for a secure, comfortable future.

The SNAME Insurance Program is happy to serve the insurance needs of SNAME members and their families nationwide. We look forward to helping you meet your insurance needs. Apply today!

Professional Liability Insurance

Risk Control: Whether It's Your Mistake or Someone Else's

You know you do high-quality work, so professional liability insurance might seem like an unnecessary expense. But the truth is lawsuits aren't easy to predict, and they can happen even when you're not at fault.

Even if a claim has no merit, defending yourself or your firm can cost a significant amount of time and money.

Here's one example of a naval architecture professional liability claim. Can you predict who will end up taking a financial hit in this case?

A naval architecture firm designed a vessel which subsequently experienced repeated cracking in the hull.

The owner hired a different naval architect to investigate the cause. The investigating naval architect's report attributed the hull problems to the original architects – they had failed to properly test the natural frequency of the hull plates.

The owner brought a lawsuit against the original architects. Who'll end up paying?

a) the original architects
b) the naval architect who investigated
c) both the original architects and the investigating architect
d) the vessel's owner

See how this case turned out on AonAEadvantage.com.

A&E Advantage is a division of Affinity Insurance Services, Inc. in all states except: AIS Affinity Insurance Agency in NY and NH; AIS Affinity Insurance Agency, Inc. in MN and OK; AIS Affinity Insurance Agency, Inc. dba Aon Direct Insurance Administrators in CA (License #0795465). Coverage availability may vary by state. This summary is for illustrative purposes only and should in no way be considered to accurately summarize the available insurance coverage. All policies are subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions, company underwriting guidelines and approval.

The Cruising Woman's Advisor
by Diana Jessie

forwards by Tania Aebi and Lin Pardey

The cruising life offers adventure, exotic destinations, and expansive opportunities for personal growth. But considering such a life leads to vexing questions: What do I need to learn? What do I do if my partner falls overboard? How will our relationship be tested at sea? Let longtime cruiser and circumnavigator Diana Jessie start you on the journey of a lifetime with her advice on short-term cruising or long-term voyaging. She addresses the concerns of women cruisers, including:

  • Cruising roles and relationships
  • What life at sea is really like
  • Children on board
  • How to make the boat your home as well as his
  • Identifying the dangers and putting them into perspective . . . and more

Plan for smooth cruising with advice from Sally Bee Brown, a contributing editor to PassageMaker magazine; Carol Cuddyer, cofounder of Sea Sense, a sailing and powerboating school for women; Dawn Riley, noted America’s Cup and Whitbread sailor; Patience Wales, two-time circumnavigator and editor emeritus of SAIL; and thirty other cruisers. This updated edition also contains information on powerboating (including choosing between power and sail), cruising with pets, and satellite communication.

Reviewed in October issue of Marine Technology

“A little gem . . . packed with useful information.”--Sailing

“Every woman who intends to step on board for more than a day sail should read Jessie’s book.”--The Log

Stability and Safety of Ships, Volume II: Risk of Capsizing
by: V.L. Belenky & N.B Sevastianov

This book deals with the many modern approaches to analyze ship dynamic stability and capsizing. This book will do much to raise the level of understanding of ship dynamic stability research to that of hydrodynamics and structures, and paves the way to consideration of ship stability safety as one aspect of the up-and-coming discipline of nonlinear dynamics of ships.
