Call for Papers for SNAME Annual Meeting 2004
Washington, DC, September 29 - October 2

To read the Call for Papers click here. Although the deadline for submittals is November 10th, next Monday, papers are already arriving. But we hope for more. Authors who cannot submit their drafts by Monday should request an extension, since papers received later, at least those arriving during November, will also be considered. But preference will be given to the papers submitted on time. The earlier the better, since all papers must be circulated to all of the members of the Papers Committee, who must then have time to read them before the Committee meets in December. Authors should note that this first submittal should be a draft of the paper or a substantial brief, rather than a short abstract - the Papers Committee must be convinced of the value of the content and of the ability of the author(s) to complete the paper. The more complete and convincing the submittal now, the more likely it will be for the paper to be accepted by the Committee.

The Ship Production Symposium will again be fully integrated with the SNAME Annual Meeting. The tentative due date for submitting drafts/presentations for SPS is January 13, 2004.

San Francisco Ferry Schmooze

This round-table workshop was organized by the Maritime Economics Panel (O-36) of SNAME in conjunction with the San Francisco Water Transit Authority on Tuesday, October 21 2003, following the World Maritime Technology Conference and SNAME Annual Meeting. The "schmooze" gave various players an opportunity to bring divergent perspectives together in an informal environment. Among other topics addressed, the program provided an opportunity for a general overview of ferry issues including speed, hull form, propulsion, size and regulations. For a report of the meeting click here.

Cookies Can be Good for You !

Have you ever been refused entry into the special “Members Only” section of the SNAME web site? If so, you have seen this message:

You are currently not able to access the members area for one of the following reasons:
1) Your browser is not set up to receive cookies. Please enable the cookies feature on your browser before attempting to login again
2) Your member account may not yet be available online. Please contact our administrator immediately so that we may update your record

If you are indeed a new member or if you do not remember your correct username and password, then option # 2 is your solution. However, if you are positive that you have typed in your username and password correctly, option # 1 is most likely the culprit.

A “cookie” is the SNAME server’s way of properly identifying you. When you type in your username and password, the SNAME server looks you up in a table. If you have identified yourself correctly, the server sends a message back to your computer, which then gives you access to the “Members Only” pages. If your cookies are turned off, then the server cannot locate you.

“Only the information that you provide while visiting a Web site can be stored in a cookie. For example, the site cannot determine your e-mail name unless you choose to type it. Allowing a Web site to create a cookie does not give that or any other site access to the rest of your computer, and only the site that created the cookie can read it.” (Internet Explorer Help)

Some computers have the "accept cookies" option turned off as a security measure. You can, however, allow your browser to accept cookies only from the SNAME server. To find out how to do this and for more information on cookies, go to the "Help" feature of you browser and look up "cookies".

In conclusion - if you want to pay your dues on-line, change your contact information, post your resume, or take advantage of any of the other "Members Only" features, turn on your cookies - cookies are GOOD for you !
