Professional Liability Insurance

Risk Control: Is it part of the plan for your own design business?

As a provider of services, you need to consider the impact that client allegations can have on your firm’s financial stability. You can face lawsuits for design errors or omissions, negligent advice, loss of documents or copyright disputes. Whether a claim is false or justified, legal defense costs alone can be devastating to you financially.

Protect your financial livelihood and reputation with professional liability insurance now available to SNAME members through the A&E Advantage Program. This comprehensive coverage is available to you at a members-only rate. The plan includes:

  • Liability limits up to $5,000,000 in financial protection
  • Legal defense costs, settlements, compensation and damages
  • Financial liabilities arising from joint ventures or negligence of any subcontractors, current and former employees or partners
  • Endorsement option for debt collection to recover owed funds
  • And more

Manage your professional risks with liability insurance. Visit us online at www.AonAEadvantage.com/SNAME to download a coverage quote form.

Subcommittee on Standards Posts
New Draft International Standards
for Review and Comment

The T&R Committee’s Subcommittee on Standards announces the posting of two new draft ISO standards for member review and comment to develop the U.S. position on these standards. The Subcommittee’s mission is to help the Society's members stay abreast of international industry standards development activities by promoting accessibility of draft ISO standards to those members who may have an interest in the development of the standards.

These draft standards have been posted on the Subcommittee on Standards web site and can be downloaded:

ISO FDIS 18072-1 Ships and marine technology — Ship structures — Part 1: Case requirements for their limit state assessment

ISO CD 25862 Ships and marine technology — Marine magnetic compasses, binnacles, and azimuth reading devices

Comments on these two standards should be sent to the USA representative to the ISO Technical Committee 8 on Ships and Marine Technology, Mr. Howard Hime at e-mail address Howard.L.Hime@uscg.mil.

A ballot form for commenting is available on the Subcommittee on Standards web site, accessible as a link on the T&R Committee page or though www.sname.org/committees/technical/standards/standards.htm.

If you have questions about the Subcommittee on Standards, please contact Roger Butturini at engtec@verizon.net.

On The Road!

A few weeks ago, SNAME took Sea Perch on the road - to the Oceantech Expo in Providence, Rhode Island. The show, sponsored by The Marine Technology Reporter Magazine, was attended by professionals in the Maine and Ocean Technology fields, and featured cutting-edge underwater technology. Some VIP attendees included the Governor of Rhode Island, as well as Robert Ballard, famous ocean explorer. It was a great opportunity to showcase the Sea Perch program and to provide information to attendees about the program. Most important, though, was showcasing the Sea Perch in the water! Few could resist operating the controls, and in the process, they were educated about the program and the reasons for its existence. Most importantly, they were asked to get involved, and many responded. A grand success!

Executive Director Kimball is shown managing the SNAME/Sea Perch Booth at the inaugural OceanTech07 Show held in Providence, RI, September 5-7. He is holding a completed Sea Perch Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) built over the summer by his 14-year old neighbor expressly for live operating demonstrations for visitors to OceanTech07. The Sea Perch Outreach Program is designed to attract middle school students to engineering, and naval architecture, marine and ocean engineering in particular, and funded by a grant from ONR for SNAME to grow this outreach initiative from a local to a national program over the next few years.
