Here are your Updates ~
Just
Two Weeks to Go!
Airfares:
Are
you thinking about attending the SMTC&E and SPS
but concerned about airfares? If so, then this will be great
news - airfares are low to Florida right now! Many flights
are under $200, depending on your location, and while you're
checking airfares, don't forget to check all three of the
local airports - Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and West Palm Beach.
They are all located within a short cab ride away from Ft.
Lauderdale, and you may save money by flying into an alternate
airport. Check airfares today, you may be pleasantly surprised!
See you in Ft. Lauderdale!
ISPS
Panel Discussion:
On Thursday, October 12th, this panel will discuss international,
national, and regional progress made as well as emerging issues
and challenges in the implementation of the International
Ship and Port facility Security code (ISPS) and its domestic
counterpart, the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002
(MTSA). Panel members will include representatives from the
US Coast Guard and a local port authority, as well as ship
and terminal operators in southeast Florida. As a key hub
of international trade in the southeastern United States,
the region poses unique challenges due to the diversity of
commercial operations in the ports, including transportation
of refined petroleum products, containerized and bulk cargoes
and millions of cruiseship passengers annually. The discussion
will be open to all registrants for the Conference.
Guest
Speakers:
SNAME Annual Banquet
- Halsey Chase Herreshoff, president of Herreshoff
Designs, and president of the Herreshoff Marine Museum/America’s
Cup Hall of Fame in Bristol, Rhode Island, will be the Society’s
Guest Speaker at the 2006 Annual Banquet. Mr. Herreshoff is
a graduate of Webb Institute and holds a Masters Degree in
Marine Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His career includes service as an Officer in the United States
Navy, Naval Architect at the Bethlehem Steel Company, Instructor
and Research Engineer at MIT and early naval architectural
data processing with the firm Herreshoff & Kerwin, formerly
located in Boston, MA.
Keynote Address
- Roger J. Marshall, President, Roger Marshall
Inc., will give the Keynote Address at the 2006 SNAME Maritime
Technology Conference & Expo. Mr. Marshall is the editor
for Boatbuilder magazine and the U.S. editor for The Yacht
Report. Since 1972 he has been a contributor to various magazines
and has written more than 600 magazine articles. Marshall
is the author of twelve marine related books, two of which
were translated into Italian and Spanish. He has just delivered
Greeenhouse Construction to Storey Publishing Company and
is currently working on a new book, Elements of Powerboat
Design.
Ship
Structure Committee Turns 60!
Sixty years ago, an investigative board was formed to look
into the sinking of the liberty ship, SS Schenectady, which
sank at her fitting-out dock in calm water. Upon the board’s
recommendation for continued study, the Secretary of the Treasury
directed the Chief Engineer of the Coast Guard to initiate
a committee that would continue studying causes of welded
ship hull failures, and thus the SSC was born. Come celebrate
with us @ Booth # 420 - Get your latest copy of the SSC Published
Reports (1996-2006) CD. All SSC reports are available on the
SSC website.

Environmental
Engineering Papers
ASNE
and SNAME Papers through Mid-2006
|
|
The
joint SNAME/ASNE Committee on Environmental Engineering (CEE),
under the direction of chairman, Cdr. Stephen P. Markle, P.E.,
is proud to announce the release of a comprehensive source
of marine environmental technical papers. The CD contains
266 papers on one compact disc encompassing almost every aspect
of marine environmental protection and environmental engineering.
Twelve
contributing members of the joint Committee on Environmental
Engineering undertook a review of ASNE and SNAME associated
publications since 1984, and selected those that in their
judgment and experience would be most helpful in their professional
endeavors. The intent was to provide both historical perspective
as well as cutting edge technology and processes in use today.

SNAME's
Mentor Program
A
message from a mentor:
I
wanted to share with you that because of this mentor
program, I was able to help my student's design
team by giving them some propulsion assistance for
their hydrofoil project.
I'm
not sure why it took the SNAME mentor program for
me to get involved, but I'm glad I did. Thanks for
all your hard work Edith! Not only was I able to
help a SNAME student member, but I was also able
to help by giving something back to my university.

Comments
Sought on Passenger Vessel ADA Guidelines
Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessibility Guidelines for Passenger
Vessels are available for public comment until November 13,
2006, and cover passenger vessels which are permitted to carry
more than 150 passengers or more than 49 overnight passengers,
all ferries regardless of size and passenger capacity, and certain
tenders which carry 60 or more passengers.
The
Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access

draft of guidelines for passenger vessels it is developing
under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The guidelines
provide accessibility criteria for various types of vessels,
including cruise and gaming ships, ferries, and excursion boats,
among others. The latest version incorporates feedback received
from the public in response to a previous draft released in
November 2004. The Board received input from vessels operators
and manufacturers, industry trade groups, disability groups,
and others during an 8-month comment period and at three public
hearings. The new draft, which includes revised text and a discussion
of the changes, is available for comment as indicated in a notice
published in the Federal Register.
