Technical
Program
Announcing
the SNAME Technical Program for the SMTC&E and SPS. Widely
viewed as the definitive source for technical information
in the maritime industry, SNAME once again offers a program
of peer-reviewed technical papers of the highest caliber,
both timely and rich in content. Presentations on advances
in production, design, operation, and innovations in product
and system technologies will provide opportunities for professional
development and will expand the knowledge base of those attending.
In addition, two high-level panel discussions will address
challenges to the cruise-ship industry in the design, construction,
safety, and operation of cruise ships, and the other will
focus on issues facing the shipbuilding industry.
-
Cruise
Ship Panel Session: "Challenges in the Cruise Ship
Industry….Design, Construction, Safety and Operations"
-
Shipbuilders' Panel Discussion
Each
panel will consist of five distinguished representatives from
these industry sectors and will be moderated by a recognized
expert. These panel discussions will be scheduled as plenary
sessions, to avoid conflict with other events and to encourage
full attention and participation.
A
majority of the papers and presentations are expected to carry
continuing education credit. A PE attending the SMTC will
therefore be able to earn as many as nine PDHs by attending
technical sessions.

SEAPerch:
Extending Engineering Expertise to Future Generations
(published in Maritime Reporter,
August 2007)
A
decline of new students in the engineering pipeline, particularly
marine engineering, naval engineering, ocean engineering,
and naval architecture, has brought industry and government
to the table to discuss solutions. One innovative program
designed to encourage students to consider careers in engineering
is SEAPerch, an initiative developed by MIT, teaming with
the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME),
made possible through a grant from the National Naval Responsibility
Initiative/Office of Naval Research. SNAME has been tasked
by ONR to take the SEAPerch Program to a national level.

SNAME
Launches Two-Year $1,000,000 Scholarships
Fund Raising Campaign!
Responding
to annual increases in college tuition and student
member requests for increases in the number and amounts of
scholarship awards, SNAME has made a two-year commitment to
match individual scholarship contributions of $100 or more,
and up to $50,000 for total contributions up to $1,000,000.
A contributor of $50,000 or more will be given the opportunity
to name a graduate or undergraduate scholarship. SNAME
is committed to increasing annual support for scholarships
to $200,000 by 2010.
The Society's scholarships program, initiated in 1933, has
awarded 407 graduate scholarships; since the undergraduate
scholarships program was initiation in 1957, the Society has
funded more than 900 undergraduate awards. This year
the Mandell and Lester Rosenblatt undergraduate scholarship
was initiated. Next year a second annual undergraduate scholarship
will be initiated, in honor of Robert N. Herbert. Additionally,
the first award of the John V. Wehausen graduate scholarship
for study of ship hydrodynamics and wave theory is expected
in 2008. These scholarships are in addition to the current
annually awarded graduate scholarships named in honor
of Wilbur N. Landers, William M. Kennedy, Tommy L. Richards,
and Alan C. McClure. Over the years, more than $3,700,000
in scholarship awards have been made in an effort to assist
in meeting the marine industry’s needs by encouraging well
qualified young engineers to pursue the study of naval
architecture, marine, and ocean engineering.
In
order to provide long-term expansion of the scholarships program,
SNAME has embarked upon a concerted effort to increase the
level of funds available. Individual members can
contribute when they pay their annual dues. Corporate contributions
should be made directly to SNAME headquarters, attention Executive
Director, identifying one of the above named scholarships
or noting the wish to fund a new award. Support for additional
named scholarships is sought as well as general support for
the undergraduate and graduate scholarships programs.
The
more than 1,300 past recipients of SNAME scholarships made
under this program know first hand the effect that these important
awards have had in making their professional development possible.
Their support of the fund raising campaign will ensure its
success and provide important incentives for today’s
students to enter the marine field.
For more information on making contributions to this program,
contact Philip Kimball,
Executive Director, or Walter
Maclean.

MARAD
Student Competition
Background
The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is the recognized, experienced
advocate and catalyst within the government for public/private
sector commercial partnerships in the important area of marine
energy and emissions. Research partnerships are formed with
government agencies, industry and others to evaluate and demonstrate
the effectiveness of alternative fuels, advanced performance
technologies, and emissions reduction technologies of marine
power plants. In this context, the described project complements
MARAD’s strategic vision and is permitted by the provisions
as set forth in the Merchant Marine Act, 1936, Section 209.
Authorization of Appropriations. The purpose of the competition
is to challenge and reward college student teams to develop
superior vessels designs or transportation systems. The specific
challenge presented to students will vary from year-to-year.
For the 2007-2008 academic year the focus will be on marine
transportation operation on Arctic routes. Click

Maritime
Industries: A Growing Bonanza
(article written by Frank Donnely, of the
Staten Island Advance)
STATEN
ISLAND, N.Y. -- Once in decline, Staten Island's shipping
and maritime industry has rebounded dramatically in the past
decade. Now considered at the forefront statewide, it employs
thousands and generates close to $1 billion to the local economy,
industry observers say. "It's a hidden secret that the
maritime industry is doing quite well and the port of New
York is booming."
