Thanks to those who participated in our first SOS – SNAME Opinion Survey!

This month the question was about networking for a job or for business.

Members reported that as a result of their SNAME membership they …

66% obtained a contract or business opportunity
42% have been hired for a job
42% networked at the SMTC&E and got a job interview
33% networked at a local Section and got a job interview
33% hired an employee

The message: Take advantage of your SNAME membership – advance your career – build your business. This is a great time of year to plan to use the SNAME advantage. Attend SMTC&E in October, reserve your spot at your fall Section meeting, and check out the new Career Center on the SNAME website.

Do you have an idea for a topic for the SOS? Please e-mail your ideas or hot button issue to Nancy Ostin.

Featured Product: Group Term Life Insurance – For Association Members & Their Families

When Was The Last Time You Reviewed Your Insurance Needs?
Life Insurance is not something you buy once and forget about. Your life insurance needs change throughout your lifetime. Major life events such as getting married, buying a home, starting a family and planning for retirement are a good time to reassess your insurance needs.

The Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers is proud to offer our members and their spouses, under age 70, the opportunity to apply for up to $660,000 of Group Term Life Insurance.

You can’t predict the future, but you can plan for it.
Nothing can replace the loss of a loved one, but carefully chosen life insurance coverage can help ease the financial strain and provide the funds your spouse and dependents need for a secure, comfortable future.

Plan ahead.

UBC Sails Through Autonomous Competition:
An Update on UBC’s Sailboat Team

The weekend of June 3rd and 4th presented a great challenge to three autonomous sailboat teams from Queen’s, UBC and Waterloo. Queen’s University hosted a threepart competition to test the hard work of the three teams. The first part of the competition involved completing a navigation test, where the vessel is to autonomously navigate upwind approximately 20 metres, round a buoy and return through the starting gate. The second leg of the competition is a match race, where each team controls the rudder of their vessel. The final portion of the competition is a presentation where the teams present their design to a panel of judges. Click here to read more.

PE Update

Several enquiries have been received concerning accreditation for PE licensing of non-US college education. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET, www.abet.org) oversees the integrity of engineering and technology programs in the US. ABET offers educational credentials evaluation services to those educated abroad through its service, Engineering Credentials Evaluation International, ECEI. Those seeking accreditation of their non-U.S. college education should go to www.ecei.org/applicants.html, which gives the fee schedule and offers downloads of the application and instructions. It also offers answers to many frequently asked questions. If further answers to questions are needed, please email Dave Chapman at dchapman@sname.org or Walter Maclean at wmaclean@sname.org. We will try to respond promptly.

Several members have recently enquired about registering early for next year’s PE Review Course (PERC). Course updates for the 2007 offering will not be available until just before the course starts in early January. In the meantime, course materials and transcripts from the 2006 presentation are still available for those wishing to start early. Please contact Richard Mouk at rmouk@sname.org or (201) 798-4800 X-3044. He will accept tuition ($500 for SNAME members and $750 for non-members) and arrange for access, which can be transferred to the 2007 PERC at no additional cost.
