~ Panels ~

A highlight of this year’s Technical Program is the addition of two major panel discussions:

  • Cruise Ship Panel Session: "Challenges in the Cruise Ship Industry….Design, Construction, Safety and Operations"
  • Shipbuilders' Panel Discussion

Each panel will consist of five distinguished representatives from these industry sectors and will be moderated by a recognized expert. These panel discussions will be scheduled as plenary sessions, to avoid conflict with other events and to encourage full attention and participation.

~ President's Reception ~

SNAME is pleased to announce the Lloyd’s Register Group as the first-ever sponsor of the President’s Reception. Traditionally, the President’s Reception opens the SNAME Maritime Technology Conference where all Conference registrants gather to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. This year, in response to exhibitor feedback, the eagerly anticipated event will be held in the Expo Hall, a wonderful way for exhibitors to visit with all Conference attendees in a social environment.

Ship Design and Construction
Volumes I and II

Ship Design and Construction is a professional reference without parallel for designers, builders, owners, and operators as well as a textbook for students. This edition acknowledges the international applicability of its content and the growing international influence of the Society in geographical diversity of its authors.

While the content of this edition is entirely new and up to date, the philosophy of the preceding editions is retained: the book again addresses the practical aspects of ship design and shipbuilding that are relevant to the ship owners and operators as well as to the designers and builders. Expanding the book to two volumes with 55 chapters, permitted an enormous increase in the breadth and depth of content. Professor Thomas Lamb’s diligence and persistence as Editor has rewarded the Society and the profession with a book that is virtually a whole professional library in two volumes.

You can order Ship Design and Construction online at www.sname.org or by contacting Tommie-Anne Faix (tfaix@sname.org or 201-499-5068).

Vintage Mahogany Speedboat Commemorative Stamps

The US Postal Service has issued new Vintage Mahogany Speedboats commemorative stamps. The four historic wooden motorboats, built by four different manufacturers, are still in use today:

Frolic, a 1915 Hutchinson Brothers launch.
Dispatch, a 1931 Gar Wood triple cockpit runabout.
Thunderbird, a 1939 Hacker-Craft commuter boat.
Duckers, a 1954 Chris-Craft Racing Runabout.

The selvage, the decorative area around the stamps, features a photograph of a modern recreation of Miss Columbia, originally built in 1924.
