Digital Marine Technology and SNAME Journals

In addition to SNAME’s printed technical journals, you can now view Marine Technology digitally.
Check it out at www.sname.org/members/digital_mt.htm.

You can subscribe to SNAME’s printed journals at www.sname.org/publications_form.htm, or by contacting Tommie-Anne Faix (tfaix@sname.org or 201-499-5068.)

To remind you of the quality you can expect from SNAME’s technical journals:

  • The Journal of Ship Production has influenced the worldwide development of ship production engineering. Each issue contains a well-rounded selection of technical papers relevant to ship professionals.
  • The Journal of Ship Research provides access to highly technical papers on applied research in hydrodynamics, propulsion, ship motions, structures, and vibrations. Many of these papers bear directly on disciplines outside ship and ocean science and engineering, such as civil and mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, and numerical analysis, making it a valuable tool to professionals in many fields.
  • Marine Technology and SNAME News, our quarterly flagship journal, covers a broad spectrum of research on the latest technological breakthroughs, trends, concepts, and discoveries in the marine industry.
  • SNAME’s Transactions, published annually since 1893, includes annual reports and papers presented at the Society’s annual meeting, with discussions of the papers and authors’ closures.

Member Benefit Update – SNAME Members’ Insurance Program
Featured Product: Group Term Life Insurance

Life Insurance is not something you buy once and forget about.
If you’re like most people, your life insurance needs change throughout your lifetime. Major life events such as getting married, buying a home, starting a family and planning for retirement are good times to reassess your life insurance needs, and if necessary, upgrade your coverage.

Many experts recommend that you have as much as ten times your annual income in life insurance protection. The Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers is proud to offer our members and their spouses, under age 70, the opportunity to apply for up to $660,000 of Group Term Life Insurance underwritten by New York Life Insurance Company. Term Life Insurance is designed to provide significant protection for your premium dollar.

You can’t predict the future, but you can plan for it.
Nothing can replace the loss of a loved one, but carefully chosen life insurance coverage can help ease the financial strain and provide the funds your spouse and dependents need for a secure, comfortable future.

The SNAME Insurance Program is happy to serve the insurance needs of SNAME members and their families nationwide. We look forward to helping you meet your insurance needs. Apply today!

PE Update

The NCEES announced the results of the April 2007 NAME PE Exam. Congratulations go to 89% of the First-Time-Takers and 100% of the Repeat-Takers. This is the first time that all of the Repeat-Takers have passed. Clearly the NAME PE Review Course (PERC) is highly effective in helping candidates prepare for the exam.

If you are are planning to take the NAME PE Exam on Friday, April 11, 2008, now is the time to submit your application. Some of the application filing deadlines are as early as six months before the exam date. In at least 28 states, the examinations are administered by the NCEES sponsored ELSES organization http://www.els-examreg.org/ after the state boards have qualified the applicants. Accordingly, applicants in these states need first to make application to their state board to become qualified and then to the examination administrator to be allowed to take the exam. Professional Credential Services, Inc., http://www.pcshq.com provides PE examination services for seven jurisdictions, including Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, and Virginia. For further information, applicants should go to: http://www.ncees.org where the results of a recent NCEES Board Survey can be found that has answers to many questions about various state policies, requirements and procedures.

To register for the 2008 PERC, contact Richard Mouk at rmouk@sname.org or (201) 499-5063. If you want to start your study early, register early and start with the 2007 units that are currently online at http://www.SNAMeLearning.org. Registering for the 2008 course is then automatic and without extra cost. The 2008 PERC will start on or about Monday, January 7. The PERC tuition remains $500 for members and $750 for non-members.

If other questions need answers, email them to Walter Maclean at wmaclean@sname.org or David Chapman at dchapman@sname.org. We will try to respond promptly.

SNAME Database Upgrade
Key Word Control Committee
Volunteers Invited

We are upgrading our database to enhance direct on-line access to all papers and other publications, through a subject key-word index. We are starting with the Transactions and will soon have all of the Annual Meeting papers from 1893 until today available as pdfs. What must be done next is to categorize them by key words, a job that requires considerable breadth and depth of technical knowledge and is therefore best accomplished by member volunteers under the supervision of a new Key Word Control Committee, KWCC. The work will be done by the volunteers working remotely and electronically, with no need for face-to-face meetings or hard copy documents.

We envision that once the KWCC is established, the committee will be contacted by members who will volunteer to take responsibility for a volume of Transactions, who will then download the established list of key words, and carefully assign one or, more likely, several key words to each paper. The selected key words will be reviewed by the KWCC to ensure uniformity, and then entered into the database. The goal is to designate key words for all 114 volumes of the Transactions by December 2007.

Service on this committee is an opportunity for experienced members to share their expertise and help to define this important technical resource. If you would like to serve on or chair the KWCC please contact Alan Rowen at arowen@sname.org.

2007-2008 National Engineering Design Challenge

Registration Opens September 5th!

The National Engineering Design Challenge (NEDC) is a competition in which teams of students learn and apply engineering skills while making a difference in the lives of persons with disabilities. Through this cross curricular experience, students apply problem solving, math, science, research, writing, presentation and drafting/design skills by creating an engineered assistive technology device for persons with disabilities.

Five select teams will be awarded all-expense paid trips to Washington, DC to present their designs and compete for prizes at the annual NEDC Finals Competition on February 15-16, 2008.

The team selected as the best overall design will win $3,000 for their school’s sponsoring department, plus a trip to 2008 NISH National Training and Achievement Conference - May 4-6, 2008 – in Los Angeles, CA.

Two additional winning teams will be awarded $1,500 for their school’s sponsoring department.
