SDC Volume II Released
The Society
of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers announces the release of Volume
2 of the third edition of its acclaimed text, Ship Design and Construction,
edited by Thomas Lamb, Professor of Naval Architecture at the University of
Michigan. As readers of Volume 1 are aware, the new edition is a worthy successor
to the highly respected previous editions in its coverage of all practical aspects
of ship design and construction. Where Volume 1 gives an overview of the processes
of design and production, each chapter of Volume 2 addresses a different ship
type, from tankers and bulk carriers to fishing vessels and submarines. This
book is far more than a textbook for students: it is a professional reference
without parallel for designers, builders, owners, and operators that is virtually
a whole professional library in two volumes.
Click
here for details including chapter titles for both volumes.
The list price
for the two-volume set is $260, and the members' price, $200, plus shipping.
The student price is $150, plus shipping. Order on-line at www.sname.org/publications_sale.htm
or contact Rich Mouk at rmouk@sname.org.

PE Update
FINAL
RESULTS have been announced for the nationwide Naval Architecture
and Marine Engineering (NAME) P.E. examination. Congratulations are in order
for 28 new NAME PEs. The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and
Surveying (NCEES) has posted the results of the April 2004 exam on its web
site. There were 34 NAME examinees and the pass rate was 82% overall with
29 taking the exam for the first time with an 86% pass rate (25) and 5 repeating
the exam with a 60% pass rate (3).
It is not known who all of the examinees are, however emails have been recieved
at SNAME headquarters from many of the successful examinees that took the
2004 P.E. Review Course (PERC). They said many good things about their experience
in the course and wished to send thanks to the instructors for their help
in preparing for the exam. They also gave constructive criticisms that will
be used to make the 2005 course even better.
For those few who need to do some more preparation so you can retake the exam
next year, please be reminded that if you wish to retake the PERC in 2005,
your tuition has already been paid and you only need to remind headquarters
staff of that fact when you register this fall. Watch the SNAMeNewsLetter
for announcements that the 2005 registration is commencing.
