European Destroyer Programs
The latest
edition of the USN Office of Naval Research Naval Architecture and Ship Systems
newsletter describes the development of destroyer programs in seven European
nations. Most of the designs are outgrowths of the NATO Frigate Replacement
Program, NFR 90. Although several nations have elected to co-develop the entire
platform or the combat system, the technical and operational philosophies differ
between navies.

Professional Engineers Accreditation sought for SMTC Papers
Under the continuing education laws and guidelines that a majority
of US and international professional licensing authorities have adopted, professional
and chartered engineers are required to accumulate evidence of their continuing
professional development in order to renew their licenses. In New York State,
for example, PEs must acquire 36 Professional Development Hours over a three-year
period. The Society is submitting a number of the technical papers that will
be presented at the annual meeting in September (now renamed the SMTC) for accreditation.
We are hoping to receive accreditation for at least twelve of the papers, and
will report progress here and on the SMTC web site, www.sname.org/AM2004/conference_technical.shtml
It is the Society's intention that in due course accredation will also be sought for technical
papers at other conferences, at section meetings, and at technical committee
meetings.
