Maritime Academy - The Training Ship Golden Bear set
sail on May 1st bound for the South Pacific. On board are sixteen boxes of clothing
bound for the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre. Leia Pfaff was instrumental in organizing
the donation, in fact she did most of the work herself! Thank you Leia! If you
would like to get an idea what our summer training cruises are like, go to www.csum.edu
and right there on the front page click on Follow the Voyage. There is a Captains
Log, Weather Info, Photo Album, and other pertinent information. To get a good
idea of the day to day life on the ship make sure you check out the Bear’s
Tale, which is the daily ships news paper. It is good to keep in mind that although
the ports-of-call sound exciting, getting there takes hard work.

Massachusetts
Institute of Technology - MIT’s Ocean Engineering Student
Association, 13Seas, set many sails this past semester. The newly elected 13Seas
Officers include: Gabe Weymouth (Graduate Student President), Bridget Downey
(Undergraduate Student President), Tadd Truscott (Treasurer), Jordan Stanway
(Undergraduate Vice President), Lauren Cooney (Making Waves Editor), Matt Unger
(SNAME Representative), and Harish Mukundan (Webmaster). This year’s group
of officers is unique in that there is a strong presence of undergraduate leadership.
The officers have also had the opportunity to sustain the Ocean Engineering
culture, since the merger of the Department with Mechanical Engineering at the
beginning of this year. The presence of 13Seas activities has remained strong
and has included luncheons, socials, and lectures. The new officers held a Mid-Ships
Kickoff Meeting in February. The officers gained a wealth of ideas as to how
to serve the OE community best, at that meeting.

University
of California (Berkeley) - The University of California (Berkeley)
Section was pleased to recognize two of its members who received the 2004 SNAME
Graduate Paper Honor Prize at the SNAME MTC&E Conference in Washington DC.
On March 16, 2004, the Berkeley Mechanical Engineering/Ocean Engineering students
Jean Toilliez and Grégoire Poupard presented their paper entitled “Fast
Evaluators for Optimal Multi-Hull Configurations” in the Northern California
Section Meeting, held at the UC Berkeley Faculty Club.

University
of New Orleans - The University of New Orleans Student Section
would first like to congratulate all of the graduating seniors on their outstanding
accomplishments. We wish them the best on all of their future endeavors. Over
the course of the past semester, our student section officers have been focusing
their efforts on increasing membership in SNAME by organizing tours and events.
In February, thirteen students took a tour of the Norwegian “Dream.”
The tour of the engine room and bridge and was given by the Chief Staff Engineer.
Lunch followed in one of the main dining rooms. Thanks go to Jim Reese of the
Port of New Orleans and John Jenicek of Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Virginia
Tech - The Virginia Tech Student SNAME section had a particularly
productive and busy year. With the convenience of having the annual conference
held only a few hours away this past fall, all members who wanted to attend
were able to. Northrop Grumman Newport News was also kind enough to show a large
handful of students a very informative tour of the shipyard. New for this year
was a small boat trip to Sea Ray in Knoxville, Tennessee. A dozen Hokies made
it down for this tour to see how impressive and efficient the assembly lines
at the Sea Ray plants work. From military shipyard and small boat tours to even
independent consults, the 54 Hokies who are registered SNAME student members
have been receiving a diverse experience in Naval Architecture.

2005-2006 Membership Directory Mailing
The
2005-2006 Membership Directory will be prepared and printed soon. All
members with current (2005) dues will be included (unless they have requested
that their names be excluded).
On
the 2005 Dues Notice and on the online payment form, a check box was provided
with the instruction that it should be checked if you wish to receive
a copy of the Directory by mail. In processing dues, we realized that
it was very likely that many members may not have seen that instruction.
Therefore,
we request that you respond to this message IF YOU DO NOT WISH
TO RECEIVE THE PRINTED DIRECTORY. Rather than disappoint members
who wish to receive the Directory, but who did not check the box, we will
send it to all who do not respond to this message. Be sure to include
your SNAME member number in your response to insure accuracy. E-mail your
response to directory@sname.org.
Remember,
the most current membership information is always available online at:
www.sname.org/members/membership_directory.htm,
so it is not necessary to have the printed Directory to find information
on fellow members.

Effective immediately, SNAME will no longer
accept payments through Western Union. The service was used by very few members, so Western
Union was preparing to charge a significant account maintenance fee.

New
SNAME Publication - IPME
INTRODUCTION
TO PRACTICAL MARINE ENGINEERING
The
Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers announces the publication
of a new introductory textbook for students of marine engineering. This
is a book intended for use in the classroom and on the floor plates. The
book is published in two volumes, with approximately 170 pages of text
in the first volume, and some 280 pages of illustrations and tables in
the second volume. This format was selected to allow students to examine
the illustrations while reading the text. This edition supersedes the
pre-publication edition of 2002 that was rushed to print to meet immediate
demand.

PE Update
It appears
that there were 35 examinees for the 2005 NAME PE exam. If last year's pass
rate holds, we should be welcoming about 30 new NAME PEs this summer.
For those who are planning on taking the NAME exam in 2006, now is the time
apply. Remember that most states require that you pass the Fundamentals of Engineering
(FE) before a PE license can be issued. The next FE Exam will be given in October.
To obtain contact information for your board go to www.ncees.org.
NCEES also has study materials for the FE Exam.
The PAKS (Professional Activities and Knowledges Study) survey that will be
used to refine the NAME exam specification will be sent to all of our known
PEs during the early part of the summer. Please complete and return it as soon
as possible. 250-300 returned surveys will be needed.
Since SNAME was named a Sponsor of PE Continuing Education Courses in November
2004, fourteen papers have been approved for presentation at meetings of NY
Metropolitan and Philadelphia Sections, and at the Pacific Region Passenger
Ship Conference last month, generally accredited for one PDH each. In addition,
six courses have been approved, each for multiple PDHs. Arrangements are in
progess for evaluation of all of the SNAME and SPS papers to be presented at
SMTC in October.
If you have any questions on the above or other PE matters, please send them
to wmaclean@sname.org or dchapman@sname.org.
We will try to respond promptly.
Best regards, Walt M.

Deterioration of Structural Integrity due to
Chemical Treatment of Ballast Water
The Ship Structure Committee, sponsored by various U.S. and Canadian entities,
released a report on deterioration of the structural integrity of metal due

Check Out the Glacier on the History Channel
On June
19 – please check out your local time and channel –
the HISTORY CHANNEL’S program, “Bone Yard,” will depict
some of our nation’s great machines and document how they are being
recycled rather than destroyed. The concluding segment of this informative
program will detail the history of the Glacier, and her rebirth, as opposed
to a meltdown.

| Former
USS/USCGC Glacier to be known as the MV GLACIER GB4 |
It has taken seven years
for the Glacier Society to reach
this point in Glacier’s refurbishing and refitting, and it could not
have been possible without the unrelenting efforts of public, private and
corporate contributions and staunch support of elected officials.
Much more remains to
be done before Glacier can set sail again. After viewing the Glacier on the
History Channel on June 19, please determine how you can help.
Go to www.glaciersociety.org
