On
May 10, 2008, The Society of Naval Architects and Marine
Engineers (SNAME) celebrated the 115th anniversary
of the official adoption of the Articles of Incorporation, which
formed the Society. Led by marine industry giants such as William
H. Webb, Francis T. Bowles, David W. Taylor and Clement Griscom,
SNAME’s original mission, to “advance the state
of the art; to afford facilities for the exchange of information
and ideas; to disseminate the results of research, experience
and information among the members; to encourage and sponsor
such research; to cooperate with educational institutions; and
to promote the professional integrity and status of the members”,
remains as true today as in 1893. Read

SEAPerch
Competition Teaches Students about Science, Math (article
in The Observer, May 1, 2008) - click
here
SEAPerch
ROV Competition Held - Prince William County School District
high school students made last-minute tweaks of their own
on Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) during the school district's
first SEAPerch competition held at George Mason University
in Fairfax, Va. on April 26.
"One
year ago, we had a blank slate in the DC area - and now we
have over 1,500 students participating in SEAPerch. Programs
were started in Prince William County, Montgomery, Anne Arundel
school districts as well as in Seattle. The SEAPerch Challenge
was developed by ASNE Volunteers in the Philadelphia area
in 2005, with the first SEAPerch Challenge in 2006,"
said Susan Giver, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers
(SNAME) Director of Outreach and Strategic Development.
SNAME
has received a grant from the Office of Naval Research, with
the goal of developing the Sea Perch model into a national
program. "The success of the Prince William County event
was possible due to the collaborative effort between the SNAME,
Office of Naval Research's (ONR) funding, corporate sponsorship
and volunteer support," said Giver. Click

What
the students are saying about Sea Perch
A few
quotes from the kids attending the MESA Young Scientist and
Engineer Day at Carderock
E.
Brooke Lee Middle School
-
"I
think the Sea Perch is a positive way to help kids realize
what they might do in the future."
-
"It
was sweet. The best thing I did in 7th grade."
-
"Enjoyable
and a great experience."
-
"The
Sea Perch is a fun way for kids to use their minds."
-
"The
Sea Perch is a great way to show that engineering can
be fun and educational."
-
"Building
the Sea Perch revived my interest in engineering".
-
"Before
building the Sea Perch, I had no idea how much effort and
understanding went into engineering. Now I know what I'm
going to get myself into later on in life. My Thanks goes
to Ms. Graves Burwell and MESA".
