Elements
of Ocean Engineering
Author:
Robert E. Randall
Ocean
engineering is a relatively new engineering discipline whose future
is linked to mankind's need to use natural energy and mineral
resources beneath the sea's surface. It is only recently that
authoritative books and references are available in this discipline
for use by practitioners in industry and for academic instruction.
This text addresses the application of engineering principles
for the analysis, design, development and management of systems
that must function in a water environment.

New SNAME Technical Panel:
Dynamic Stability Task Group
The
formation of the Dynamic Stability Task Group (DTSG)
was approved at the SNAME 2007 Annual Meeting in Florida. This
new Task Group will be a long range, cross-disciplinary study
of dynamic stability for vessels that operate in significant
sea conditions. The DSTG will operate under the Panel SD-3 “Stability,”
while also reporting to Panels H-7 “Seakeeping,”
H-10 “Ship Controllability,” and O-49 “Small
Working Vessel Operations and Safety.”
The
primary focus of the work of the DSTG will be to provide technical
review, evaluation, and recommendations concerning the state-of-the-art
for a number of aspects of dynamic stability. Participants will
comprise an international assembly of experts and interested
parties, representing government, academia, and industry, whose
interest in the development of new generation stability-evaluation
methodologies spans the range of ship types, sizes, and operation.
The
Task Group will use working teams to focus on particular areas
of interest for dynamic stability. Recent news, meeting announcements,
progress on specific activities, and additional information
will be posted on the Task Group website. Annual reports on
the activities of the DSTG will be given at the T&R session
of the SMTC.
The
first meeting of the DSTG will be held on May 14 in Washington,
D.C.
For
more information, please visit the DSTG website:
