Expo Booth Sales

SNAME continues to expand content at the SMTC&E to ensure that the event remains relevant to the modern marine industry while giving the exhibitors a key venue in their marketing schedule. The addition of shipbuilding and cruise ship panel discussions to the program this year at SMTC&E has sparked renewed interest and added valuable content to the program for many equipment and service companies in the marine industry. This is your chance to be part of the marine industry's only event dealing with the newest technology in design, engineering, and construction methods for the fleet of tomorrow. Space still remains for the 2007 SMTC&E in Ft. Lauderdale, FL this November 14th-16th. Contact us or stop by and see us at OTC Booth # S7 for more information on exhibiting.

SNAME Maritime Technology Expo
Exhibitor Innovation Sessions

Building on the success of last year’s Innovation Sessions, SNAME is pleased to announce the return of this exciting program in 2007. In response to positive feedback from exhibitors and attendees alike, the SNAME Maritime Technology Expo, scheduled for November 14-16, 2007 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, will once again feature presentations on new products and technologies in a special lecture-style area of the Expo Hall.

The Innovation Sessions are held during the coffee breaks and lunch breaks in the Expo Hall when all conference attendees are present and offer an opportunity for exhibitors to informally present their products and technologies to SMTC attendees.

The Innovation Sessions are reserved only for SMTC&E exhibitors and present an additional marketing opportunity. Exhibitors are encouraged to take advantage of their presentations by inviting key clients and potential customers. Expo invitations and passes will be mailed to exhibitors in August, allowing time for use in marketing direct mail to encourage attendance at the Expo.

Details:

  • 20-minute segments, with 10 minutes for Q&A, for a total of 30 minutes maximum per session.
  • 14 time slots available:

Thursday, November 15:
11 am - 11:30 am
11:30 am - 12 pm
1 pm - 1:30 pm
1:30 pm - 2 pm
2 pm - 2:30 pm

Friday, November 16:
12:30 pm - 1 pm
1 pm - 1:30 pm

  • Although these presentations will not be formally reviewed, SNAME must reserve the right to refuse any that do not seem appropriate, and will rely on the exhibitor’s and presenter’s own standards of professional behavior to make close supervision unnecessary.
  • Brief abstracts must be submitted to SNAME HQ to Brenda Elmore-Feliciano at belmore@sname.org.
  • As there is a limited number of slots available, they will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. A confirmation will be sent after each abstract is received. Two additional presentations will be selected as standbys.

Please let me know if you have any questions on this exciting opportunity for exhibitors to inform and educate maritime professionals attending the SMTC&E and SPS about new products and technologies.

USS Monitor Center at the Mariner's Museum

It's an Ironclad Must-See for Naval History Buffs

". . . 'First duty, duty next, and duty last; Ay, Turret, rivet me here to duty fast! -- '
So nerved, you fought wisely and well;
And live, twice live in life and story;
But over your Monitor dirges swell,
In wind and wave that keep the rites of glory."

Newport News, Va.

Herman Melville's "In the Turret" should be updated: Wind and wave no longer have sole possession of the ironclad's glory. Now they must share it with the new USS Monitor Center, which opened here at the Mariner's Museum on March 9, the 145th anniversary of the Monitor's "duel" with the CSS Virginia (better known to history as the Merrimack). The duty-bound "you" of the poem is Lt. John L. Worden, who commanded the vessel until he was badly wounded during the battle of Hampton Roads. Lucky for him. He wasn't on board on Dec. 31, 1862, when the Monitor foundered off Cape Hatteras in 230 feet of water, with the loss of 16 men.

Melville's friend Nathaniel Hawthorne observed the ironclad just a few days after the battle and decided that "it could not be called a vessel at all; it was a machine. . . . A whole history of naval renown reaches its period, now that the Monitor comes smoking into view; while the billows dash over what seems her deck, and storms bury even her turret in green water as she burrows and snorts along, oftener under the surface than above." The 63,500-square-foot, $30 million facility does full justice to this moment, when, as the center's chief historian Craig Symonds aptly put it in his opening-night lecture, "history itself tipped on the fulcrum of technology."

Scale model of USS Monitor on display at SNAME Headquarters (scale 1/8" = 1')

The race between the Union and Confederacy to see whose ironclad would be the first to put to sea, the two-day Battle of Hampton Roads (which ended in a draw), the brief subsequent careers of both ships, and the recovery of their artifacts are all clearly and cogently explained in the "Ironclad Revolution" exhibition through contemporary illustrations and paintings, personal mementos, films and interactive computer stations, and re-created interiors and exteriors.
