Member Value Survey an OVERWHELMING Success!
Thank
you to the 2,034 members who responded to our survey last month. Overall we
had a 30% response rate (considered remarkably good),
a statistical sample size that will provide us with highly credible data.
Congratulations
to those members who have won a year's worth of free SNAME membership.
Congratulations are also in order for the Southwest
Section. For having the highest percent of respondents (42.5%)
they will receive a $250 check for their use at a Section event.
This tells
us that many members have opinions they want to share. We will take these
opinions very seriously over the next month as we analyze the data and over
the next several months as we build action plans to implement changes. SNAME
membership will be informed via the SNAMeNewsLetter
and Marine Technology of results, as
they are available.
A quick recap of some of the responses:
Over
90% of our members have bachelors – doctorate degrees
93.6% said that they would refer SNAME to a colleague
93% indicated that they would definitely or probably renew their membership
(thank you!)
For the
Student Mentoring Program, 11.3%
expect to participate as mentors, and 41% said they support the program. If
you are in the 47.6% who do not know enough about the program or would like
information, please e-mail Edith Nowak enowak@sname.org.
SNAME would also like to thank the people who have developed and
implemented this survey.

Ocean Recoverable Energy - T&R Panel Under Consideration -
Recent
events at the gas pump have added urgency to calls for alternative energy sources.
The oceans provide a range of opportunities for alternative energy, including
offshore wind farms, ocean current turbines, wave power, ocean thermal energy
conversion, salinity energy, and even at-sea farming of hydrocarbon generating
marine algae. All of these efforts will benefit from the expertise of SNAME
members. Therefore SNAME is exploring possible roles in alternative energy with
a possible view to setting up a Technical and Research Ad Hoc Panel in this
area. Members interested in participating should contact Chris Barry at chris.d.barry@uscg.mil.

Project
Outreach News
“Project
Outreach” needs you! Project
Outreach is a program funded by the ONR, and is designed to encourage high-school
students to pursue rewarding careers in science and engineering in general,
and naval architecture, marine engineering and naval engineering, advanced marine
design in particular, through the dissemination of information on ship design-related
careers. Based on SNAME’s extensive membership, the ONR felt SNAME would
be a great source of interested members willing to visit their local high schools
and middle schools to disseminate this information and get students excited
about careers in the maritime industry.
The CDs
and brochures have been completed, the information was mailed to 4,000 high
school guidance counselors, and now the SNAME membership needs to take action.
It’s simple – just call your local high school and ask for the guidance
office, and tell them you would like to find out how you can reach their students
to share career information. Job fairs, classroom visits, individual meetings
are all great ways to reach the students.
If you need
one of the DVD's or brochures, contact sgiver@sname.org,
or if you have questions about the program or new ideas to continue Outreach
efforts, call Susan Giver at 412-741-0995.

"Pictures
to Ponder"
|
|
Often we
encounter an interesting or puzzling photograph that we want to share with our
professional colleagues. We eagerly send the photo to a number of associates
who might circulate it further, but this is terribly inefficient and slow. Much
better to send the photo to us at SNAME HQ, where it can be distributed rapidly
and efficiently to thousands of marine professionals. For a sample photo click
here. Please note however that we cannot accept any photo that would be
offensive to anyone or that is copyrighted.
To submit
a photo please send it electronically to connie@sname.org,
with any caption that you deem appropriate. Please include your name so that
we can give proper credit for the contribution.
