American
naval engineer receives 24-year sentence
for exporting defense technology
A US federal court in California has found that a Chinese-born
naval engineer betrayed the nation by conspiring to export
sensitive defense technology to China. The naval engineer
was convicted of conspiracy and was sentenced to 24 years
and five months in federal prison. An assistant US attorney
noted that the fact that the information that the naval engineer
gave to China was unclassified did not diminish the damage
done to the US. Witnesses testified that some materials could
be bought from the website of the American Society of Naval
Engineers until the government put a stop to it. The naval
engineer is a naturalized US citizen who worked on naval propulsion
systems. He was also convicted of acting as an unregistered
foreign agent, attempting to violate export control laws,
and making false statements to the FBI.
