SNAME
Membership Survey is Coming Soon
(please
give us 20 minutes so that we can better serve you!)
You will
soon be receiving a hyperlink to the web-based 2006 SNAME member values survey,
and I again want to express the urgency and criticality of SNAME receiving your
feedback. This survey was developed by a small team of volunteers in an effort
to improve SNAME products and services to better deliver what it is that members
desire in their membership. We appear to be at a critical junction in the history
of our society, and we recognize that we must change to improve our ability
to serve members. In order to do this properly we also recognize that we need
to hear from our members.
In an effort
to boost participation, SNAME will have a random drawing to award one year of
free membership to three lucky respondents. We will additionally provide $250
for the local section that encourages the largest percentage of its membership
to participate.
Again, I
ask that you please help to strengthen the value of SNAME membership by taking
the time to complete our upcoming survey! It is expected that this survey will
take approximately 20 minutes on average.
Sincerely,
Dr. Roger
Compton

2006
World Maritime Technology Conference
London,
March 6-10
The
second World Maritime Technology Conference, known as WMTC 2006, was
hosted by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology
(IMarEST) and held on March 6-10, at the Queen Elizabeth II Convention
Center in Westminster, London. The inaugural WMTC had been held in San
Francisco in 2003, organized and premiered by SNAME, and the next will
be hosted by the Institute of Marine Engineers (India) in January 2009,
and will be located in Mumbai, India.
This
year’s theme was “Maritime Innovation – Delivering
Global Solutions,” and 25 international maritime organizations
enthusiastically supported the four-day technical conference and exposition
with 1200 delegates (55 US attendees) from 40 countries. Over 230 authors
and presenters participated in the ten technical paper tracts and poster
sessions covering Marine Engineering Systems, Commercial Shipping, Marine
Renewable Energy, Exclusive Economic Zone Management, Operational Oceanography,
Naval Engineering, Offshore Oil and Gas, Underwater Vehicles, Coast
and Ocean Mapping and Reefs of the World. Additionally, some 100 exhibitors
filled the five floors of the convention center showcasing their latest
creative marine products and technology. The Society was enthusiastically
represented by Executive Director, Phil Kimball, who managed SNAME’s
exposition booth over the four days, and participated in a number of
the WMTC’s technical sessions, social events and Annual Dinner.

National Maritime Day

May 22nd is National
Maritime Day, first declared so by the United States Congress
in 1933. Its observance honors the contributions of the American Merchant
Marine, civilians who have defended the freedom of the United States since
1775, and who executed the largest sealift the world has ever known during
World War II. Observance of National Maritime Day also honors the maritime
industry and the benefits in brings Americans in terms of transportation,
jobs, goods, and recreational opportunities.

Extraordinary
Engineers -
Looking for Future TV Stars!
WGBH
is producing a new engineering reality competition show for kids called
Design Squad. In the show, teams of teenagers compete
by designing solutions to engineering problems, like building an automatic
egg scrambling machine. The first season of 13 episodes is being
produced this summer and will air nationwide starting February 2007.
As
part of the series, WGBH is producing 60-second video profiles of real
engineers and engineering projects. The purpose of these
mini-docs is to make real world connections for viewers, improve the public
image of engineering, and inspire kids to believe that engineering is
accessible to them. These videos may be broadcast in a few ways:
on the television show, via podcasting, or streamed on the WGBH website.
WGBH
is currently seeking subjects for these mini-docs. They are looking
for young engineers who represent diversity in gender, race, and engineering
field, and who will appeal to the show's target audience, kids ages 9-12.
Examples include a mechanical engineer who designs and builds snowboards,
or an environmental engineer who works with Engineers Without Borders.
Please
email submissions and suggestions to auditions@wgbh.org.
Thank you!

New
SNAME Scholarships Announced
On March
20, 2006, the Society’s Executive Committee approved two new student scholarships
in the names of Mandell and Lester Rosenblatt and John V. Wehausen, both highly
respected, professionally recognized and prominent members of the Society.
The first,
the Mandell and Lester Rosenblatt Undergraduate
Scholarship, will be awarded annually to students of naval architecture,
marine or ocean engineering, who, among other qualifications, have demonstrated
interest in SNAME as an undergraduate student member by actively participating
in a SNAME Student Section. It is anticipated that this scholarship will first
be awarded in the 2007-2008 academic year, with applications available through
the SNAME web site for those interested in applying.
The second
scholarship, The John V. Wehausen Graduate Scholarship
for Graduate Study in Ship Hydrodynamics and Wave Theory, will
be awarded once specific funding criteria can be met.
Relevant
information on these two new scholarships will be posted on the SNAME web site,
www.sname.org, in the near future for those
seeking to apply.

University of
Michigan Dept. of NA&ME
is Celebrating its 125th Anniversary!
In November 2005 the opening event for the year of celebration was held with
presentations, a return to the classroom, a reception, and attendance at a Michigan
football game. The highlight of the weekend was the awarding of a $2M endowment
for the Richard B. Couch Professorship in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
- the department’s first endowed professorship.
Continuing
the festivities in February, the Captain Ralph R. and Florence Peachman Lecture
was given by Peter Tang-Jensen, Executive Vice President, Odense Shipyard, Ltd,
A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. His talk, "There is Nothing Like Experience!
My 10 Commandments About Ship Design and Engineering," was well received
by students, faculty, and guests.

Aussies Rescue Civil War Submarine
AUSTRALIAN
experts have been called on to help salvage a rusting American Civil War hand-powered
submarine -- one of the world's first submersibles -- 130 years after it was
beached on a remote island off Panama.
Before being
identified in 2002, the rusting hulk lying on the tide line off the Island of
Pearls was believed by Panamanians to be a World War II Japanese midget submarine.
The 18m Explorer was originally intended to be used by the Union navy and was
built by an immigrant iron worker, Julius Kroehl, for $75,000 in 1865, a time
when a mid-level public servant earned $200 a year. The submarine came too late
to play a decisive role in the Civil War and it was sent to trawl for pearls
in the Gulf of Panama. But
after collecting 10 tonnes of pearl shell in 11 days on its maiden trip, the
sub was abandoned after the divers on board succumbed to the bends, known in
those days as "the fever".
The West
Australian Maritime Museum's iron ship specialist Mike McCarthy, just back from
visiting the wreck, said yesterday that after the submarine was abandoned the
owners went bust. "What's really interesting is it then enters the Pearl
Island legend as a Japanese World War II boat," Dr McCarthy said.
Following
its rediscovery by James Delgado of the Vancouver Maritime Museum, corrosion
experts from around the world, including Ian MacLeod and Neil North from the
Fremantle-based maritime museum, were invited to join a survey of the wreck
to advise on its restoration. Dr MacLeod and Dr North came to prominence with
their cutting-edge 1985 conservation work to preserve a historic "trunk
engine" used to power Western Australia's first coastal steamer, SS Xantho.
That engine will soon be on display in Fremantle.
The same
Australian expertise will now be applied in the restoration of Kroehl's Explorer.
