SNAME and ONR bring Sea Perch to the Washington, DC area. On Thursday, February 28th, Prince William County, a Virginia suburb of Washington, DC, gathered over 500 9th grade students together for the grand announcement of the first-ever Sea Perch Challenge in the Washington, DC area. Prince William County was introduced to Sea Perch through SNAME's outreach efforts, and they are fully embracing the program by incorporating it into their 9th grade science curriculum, affording 580 9th graders the opportunity to learn about weight, propulsion, buoyancy, and engineering as they participate in the Sea Perch program. RADM Kevin M. McCoy, Chief Engineer and Deputy Commander, Naval Systems Engineering, and Mr. Michael Alperi, Deputy Program Manager, Unmanned Maritime Systems, Program Executive Office, Littoral and Mine Warfare, spoke to the students about the possibility of careers in engineering and naval architecture, and other speakers included representatives from various sponsoring organizations.

The Washington Post, Prince William Edition, featured an article on the project, mentioning SNAME, and there will be two additional articles following the progress of the Sea Perch activities in Prince William County. Click here to read the article, and click here for additional photos and information on the Grand Announcement.

If you are interested in participating as a judge in one of the Sea Perch Challenges being held this Spring, visit www.seaperch.org for information.

Risk Control: When the Past Comes Back to Cost You

How important is it for a naval architect to have professional liability coverage? Here's one example of how insurance helped a naval architect manage a claim of negligence on his tug project.

Two years after delivering a design for the tugs, the naval architect updated the specifications at the client's request. The client ordered four tugs – and subsequently brought a suit against the naval architect.
The client alleged that defects in the architect's revised specs had caused the building of the tugs to be delayed and claimed $2.5 million in damages.

The claim was found to be without merit. But the naval architect incurred $150,000 in legal costs and experts' fees in the course of defending himself. Because he had professional liability coverage, he did not have to fund these fees himself.

Many architects and engineers feel that doing good work is their best protection – and in most cases it is. But sometimes even the most skilled professionals can be drawn into lawsuits over the quality of their work. If your firm's good name was challenged in a meritless claim, could you afford to defend it?

As a SNAME member, you have access to professional liability policy with coverage for legal defense costs, settlements, compensation and damages. Visit www.aonaeadvantage.com/sname for more information and a members-only coverage quote.
