SNAME Membership Survey

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I am writing to ask for your assistance so that SNAME can better serve you. You may recall from my message in the October 2005 Marine Technology that I expressed great concern about the age distribution within our membership. More than 32% of our members are above the age of 60, while only 4% are below the age of thirty (not including students). There exists a significant gap of young engineers within our ranks, which indicates a cause for concern for the future of our society, and perhaps our maritime profession.

For years SNAME leadership has been working to address this issue, as well as that of the declining number of members in general. Whether these trends are based on societal changes, economic factors, or SNAME performance, one thing is clear: we need to ensure that as a professional society we are meeting the needs of our members, and potential members.

We recognize the need to hear directly from you, our members, to critique us on how well we are providing our current services and to tell us what else we can offer you as a member. With this in mind we have developed an online survey which will be released in the coming weeks. I mention this to you now with the request that you please take the time to fill it in when received. Our ability to assist you with your professional needs is dependent on your input.

SNAME Maritime Technology Expo
Innovation Sessions

Building on the success of last year’s new Innovation Sessions, SNAME is pleased to announce the return of this exciting program in 2006. In response to positive feedback from exhibitors and attendees alike, the SNAME Maritime Technology Expo, scheduled for October 12-13, 2006 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, will once again feature presentations on new products and technologies in a special lecture-style area of the Expo Hall.

Details:

  • 20-minute segments, with 10 minutes for Q&A, for a total of 30 minutes maximum per session
  • Time slots available: Thursday, October 12 and Friday, October 13
  • Although these presentations will not be formally reviewed, SNAME must reserve the right to refuse any that do not seem appropriate, and will rely on the exhibitor’s and presenter’s own standards of professional behavior to make close supervision unnecessary.
  • Brief abstracts must be submitted to SNAME HQ to enowak@sname.org.
  • As there is a limited number of slots, they will be available on a first come, first served basis. You will receive a confirmation after your abstract has been received. Two additional presentations will be selected as standbys.

Please let me know if you have any questions on this exciting opportunity for exhibitors to inform and educate maritime professionals attending the SMTC&E and SPS about new products and technologies.

Regards,

Susan M. Giver

2006 Designer Symposium

More and more boatbuilders around the world are switching to fully-cored hulls, often in conjunction with a move to closed molding techniques such as infusion - and the trend is accelerating. To review all aspects of the subject the symposium organizers have gathered together an international panel of independent speakers who can talk with authority on design, engineering, process methodology, construction and marketing. The aim is to dispel the myths, examine the benefits, consider the processing options, review actual applications and discuss the marketing advantages of the concept.

This intensive one day symposium is aimed squarely at technical personnel who are involved in the design, engineering, construction and accreditation of grp/composite boats whether they be for leisure, commercial or military applications. Naval architects, surveyors, structural engineers and production management personnel are the key target audience.

NTSB - Capsizing of Small Passenger Vessel

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a Summary (click here to view) of its Marine Accident Report relating to the capsizing of the small passenger vessel LADY D in Baltimore on March 6, 2004. The vessel capsized in a rapidly developing storm. Of the 25 passengers and crew on board, five died and four suffered serious injuries. The NTSB concluded that the primary cause of the incident was a lack of intact stability, resulting from inadequate stability testing and use of an inaccurate average passenger weight.

This subject is one of several incidents being studied by SNAME Ad Hoc Panel 15 (Loading Criteria for People Aboard Passenger Vessels).
