Helping
SNAME Student Sections:
A New Student Leadership Training Program
Matthew Unger
Chairman, SNAME Student Steering Committee
Member, SNAME Executive Committee
SNAME
Student Sections provide two very important, and largely unrecognized,
functions for all of the Society: (1) Student Sections are SNAME’s
primary mechanism for recruiting new Student Members, and (2) students
have the most exposure to SNAME at the Student Section level. In other
words, Student Sections represent the whole of SNAME to many of the Society’s
Student Members. So when you think about it, SNAME should really be helping
the Student Sections whenever it possibly can.
Thanks
to the great attendance and feedback from the Student Summit (held this
past October in Houston), the Student Steering Committee (SSC) realized
that one way to help the Student Sections (and thereby all of SNAME) was
to offer formal training to the leaders of the Student Sections. With
training and a better familiarization with SNAME, our Student Section
leaders will be better equipped to run their respective sections. With
that said, I am extremely pleased to announce that the SNAME Executive
Committee has accepted an SSC proposal to hold a student leadership seminar!

Massachusetts
Institute of Technology - Following a winter break, students
at MIT “scattered” for the month of January, during which MIT’s
Independent Activities Period (IAP) took place. Some students came back to campus
for short courses in a variety of topics of interest to them, while others stayed
away and found month long internships. Still other students, including most
of the graduate students, came back to campus to continue their research. Our
second semester finally commenced with the first day of classes being held on
February 7th. Read more

National Maritime Day

A little known American
commemorative date is approaching on May 22. Working behind the scenes, a
group of Washington, D.C., maritime industry officials hope to make this an
event one the whole nation embraces. In 1933, Congress decreed May 22 as National
Maritime Day. Each year since it has been a day for the United States to observe
its proud maritime heritage, honor the men and women who serve and have served
as merchant mariners, and recognize the many benefits that result from our
American maritime industry. National Maritime Day also follows on the heels
of National Transportation Week, which the U.S. Department of Transportation
has announced will run the week of May 14-20.As a way to underscore the critical
importance of the maritime industry to the national transportation network,
this year the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD), supported by the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers, the American Association of Port Authorities, The
Propeller Club of the United States, Waterways Council, Inc., and other maritime
groups, will introduce an awareness campaign designed to focus national attention
on the maritime industry. Called, "Maritime Matters," the campaign
will help to communicate the value of the maritime industry in relation to
the economy, national security, jobs, environmental protection, agriculture,
quality of life, recreation and more. Read
