The
student forum, a concept developed through the Student Summit
which took place at the SMTC&E in Ft. Lauderdale, is on-line!
The forum offers students a great opportunity to communicate and
brainstorm about a variety of topics such as how to maintain a
good Student Section and keep students in SNAME. The forum is
located under the Student
Activities link on the SNAME homepage. All members may access
it by using his/her SNAME username and password.

| Mentor
Program
Last
year, the Society launched its "SNAME Mentor Program"
to provide one-on-one academic and career guidance to student
members by older, experienced members. Students who benefited
from the program were given internships, site visits to design
firms and shipyards, academic-related counseling and assistance
in choosing graduate schools. This is an opportunity for which
many students in other industries wish, and one that SNAME readily
provides to its student members with the help of numerous motivated
member-volunteers who are equally benefiting from their mentoring
experience. In addition to information posted on our website,
a letter and enrollment form were included in each 2007 SNAME
Membership Renewal Notice, to ensure that all of our members
are aware of this beneficial program. The response has been
positive with new volunteers all the time, and many returning
to continue their positive experience as mentors from last year.
It is a very simple program with communication that takes place
via e-mail at your convenience. If you haven't responded already,
and are still considering becoming a mentor, please contact
Edith Nowak-Rosciszewski at enowak@sname.org,
or give her call at 201-499-5059. |

| MIT
Press Has Special Offer for SNAME Members
 |
The
MIT Press is pleased to offer SNAME members the opportunity
to purchase Ships and Science: The Birth of Naval Architecture
in the Scientific Revolution, 1600-1800, a new book by
acclaimed naval architect and historian Larrie D. Ferreiro,
at a special discount. “Naval architecture was born
in the mountains of Peru, in the mind of a French astronomer
named Pierre Bouguer who never built a ship in his life.”
So writes Larrie Ferreiro at the beginning of this pioneering
work on the science of naval architecture. Bouguer’s
monumental book Traité du Navire (Treatise of the
Ship) founded a discipline that defined not the rules
for building a ship but the theories and tools to predict
a ship’s characteristics and performance before
it was built. In Ships and Science, Ferreiro argues that
the birth of naval architecture formed an integral part
of the Scientific Revolution. Using Bouguer’s work
as a cornerstone, Ferreiro traces the development of this
new discipline and describes its practical application
to ship design in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Alex
Roland, Professor of History at Duke University, says,
“This authoritative and engaging history leaves
one eagerly anticipating its sequel,” and Andrew
Lambert, Loughton Professor of Naval History at King's
College London, agrees: “In this book, Larrie Ferreiro
has produced a work worthy of the discipline he has practiced
and studied with equal ability. The result is a book of
the highest importance, linking science, ships, and sea
power."?
This
hardcover book retails for $45.00, but you may purchase
the book for $36.00, a 20% discount. Simply use this link,
http://mitpress.mit.edu/SNAMEShips,
which will automatically take you to the book’s
main page on The MIT Press website. Place however many
copies you’d like in your cart, and the discount
will be automatically applied. |
