SNAME Events Calendar

Planning a meeting and are concerned about a conflict? We recommed that you check the Events Calendar on the SNAME website to see what is happening in the naval architecture, marine engineering, and ocean engineering industry. The calendar is located on our home page (www.sname.org) in the left hand column, or click here to view. This is a good page to "bookmark" in your browser!

The Events Calendar is maintained and monitored by SNAME Headquarters staff, however, all SNAME members may post an event on the calendar. Here's how:

  • go to the events calendar
  • click on the "post an event" link
  • enter your SNAME username and password
  • click on "add new event"
  • fill in the form

Questions or comments regarding the events calendar? Contact Connie Cali-Poutré at connie@sname.org

SOS Results

The SOS question last month in regard to membership categories received our strongest response yet to an SOS question!

The SNAME Executive Committee is considering a change to the bylaws that would eliminate the competency and experience requirements that distinguish the different grades of membership: Member and Associate Member. This would essentially reduce our membership categories to Fellow, Member, Affiliate and Student. Would you support such a change?

68% responding indicated that they would support a change
32% opposed a change

The discussion has sparked much positive reflection on the rigueur of the professional status and education required, as well as an acknowledgement that our stature as a professional society is enhanced by the quality of the membership. Look for more information in future issues of eNews.

For the Small-Craft Enthusiast

The Small Craft Papers CD, which includes over 300 papers relevant to the small craft community, has become a best seller since it became available in November 2003. SNAME’s Small Craft Committee pulled these papers from SNAME Transactions, Marine Technology, Journal of Ship Research and Section papers dating from 1985-2003

The papers are organized with a linked index to enable papers to be located by author, title original source, or subject. The CD is now in its third printing and priced at only $50 to SNAME members.

To order the CD please email Tommie-Anne Faix at tfaix@sname.org

Engineers Week
February 18-24, 2007

Shine the spotlight on careers in Engineering! Help the future of the field by increasing student awareness of marine and ocean engineering, and marine science-related careers by participating in Engineers Week, February 18-24, 2007. Engineers Week is a coalition of engineering, professional and technical societies and corporations and government agencies, founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The purpose is to "ensure a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers among young students and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science."

Make a presentation to your child's class, or contact your local middle or high school and offer to speak to science or math classes during Engineers Week. Get your SNAME section involved and develop a creative design competition geared towards kids, and SNAME HQ will help you publicize your efforts! If you need materials to utilize during your presentation, contact sgiver@sname.org for SNAME's Outreach DVD and brochures. For additional Outreach presentation ideas for Engineer's Week, visit _www.eweek.org/index.shtml and _www.engineeringedu.com/engineersweek.html.
