International
Marine Design Conference 2006
May 16 to 19, 2006
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor |
We
are ready. ARE YOU?
The organizers
of the Ninth International Marine Design Conference have
planned an important and professionally interesting ship design conference
and invite all professionals involved in the design of commercial and naval
ships, and offshore platforms to attend.
The aim
of International Marine Design Committee (IMDC) is to promote all aspects
of marine design as an engineering discipline with particular emphasis on
issues of synthesis. The Ninth Conference will support and further this aim
through a presentation of a keynote presentation and a strong technical program.
The conference program will also return to the earlier practice of presenting
state-of-the-art reports. Read more ...

Memorial
University of Newfoundland - The 2006 winter semester began
with a local Student Section meeting held on February 9, 2006. The meeting included
a presentation by Dr. Claude Daley, professor and the Chair of Ocean and Naval
Architectural Engineering Discipline at Memorial University of Newfoundland,
followed by light refreshments.
The presentation
was entitled as “Re-appraisal of Design Ice Pressures for Ships and Offshore
Structures”. In the lecture, Prof. Daley gave a brief introduction about
the history of ice engineering and ice forces on ships followed by his research
results. In the polar regions of the world, ships and offshore structures may
be subject to impacts with large ice features. Pressure-area models are commonly
used to determine both local and global ice loads. A general description of
the two types of ice pressure-area models is given. Re-analysis of data from
the trials on the USCGC Polar Sea suggests rising average pressure with rising
contact area, the opposite of the expected result. Read

Texas
A&M Galveston - The SNAME Texas A&M at Galveston Student
Section has been reactivated!!! The first meeting was held on February 6, 2006.
The meeting produced a great turnout and we are certain that we will continue
to gain more members. Students have a huge interest in welcoming professionals
to come to see what we have to offer here in Galveston, and feel that this organization
will definitely help them network with professionals. They are also excited
about the opportunity to attend conferences, enter competitions and to use the
knowledge that they have gained so far. Read

University
of Michigan - (News Brief) - Fifteen Quarterdeck students
attended the 2006 Winter Meeting for the Great Lakes/Great Rivers Region held
at the Holiday Inn in Perrysburg, OH (near Toledo) January 26-27, 2006. Several
UM students presented at the conference. Thursday night, students mingled with
colleagues working in the maritime-related fields at a reception. Students heard
presentations on topics ranging from recent innovations in shipbuilding and
launching to fuel cells to the design of a 200,000 cubic meter LNG carrier.
After the presentations, students toured the RTM STAR Center's training facilities
and bridge simulator.
Virginia
Tech - After a full fall semester of SNAME activities, the students
at Virginia Tech look forward to the spring semester. This semester will be
filled with various speakers and a shipyard tour. VT is currently planning a
trip for the end of March to visit Northrop Grumman Ships Systems Shipyard,
Ingalls Division, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. These tours will allow our students
to climb on board some of the vessels they work with throughout their educational
experience. The seniors, who are deeply involved in their design project now,
will also get some great hands on advice from members of industry. The Hokies
will also be prepared for interviews for internships and full time employment.

Scholarship Fund Contributions
Every winter
the SNAME Scholarship Committee meets to review scholarship applications and
recommend awards to worthy candidates. More than 400 graduate scholarships have
been awarded since the program's beginning in 1937. Most members are aware that
the costs of college education have increased at more than 10% a year for the
past several years. Each year requests are received for expansion of the scholarship
program, most recently at the Student Steering Congress in October. However,
most members are not aware that SNAME funding for scholarships has not kept
up with these increased costs. In fact the funds currently available are essentially
the same as they were 20 years ago.
With many
senior marine professionals approaching retirement there is a forecasted shortage
of graduates. If the need is to be met more support must be available for promising
students. The goal is that SNAME scholarship support be doubled by 2010. Many
members make generous contributions each year, and their support is gratefully
acknowledged. But the larger membership must join in as well if this goal is
to be achieved.
There are
named scholarships that merit individual support, namely the Landers, Kennedy,
Richardson, McClure, and Rosenblatt scholarships, as well as the general fund.
If you or your company has not yet made a contribution this year to one or more
of these SNAME scholarships, I invite you, no, I encourage you to do so now.
I can't think of a better way to support future needs of our industry.

SNAME
Provides Start-up Funds for Oily Water Separator Research
Partners Invited
In January 2005 the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) formed
a Technology and Research Ad Hoc Panel that was tasked to evaluate oily water
separators and systems. This panel operates under SNAME’s Technology and
Research Program, which is recognized internationally for its excellent and unbiased
guidance on marine technical issues. Initial evaluation of the scientific and
engineering issues surrounding oily water separator systems by the Ad Hoc Panel
has shown that there are numerous unsettled operational, human factors, scientific,
and engineering issues that can interfere with the design and construction of
reliable and verifiable systems aboard ships at this time. (See www.sname.org/committees/tech_ops/oilywater/meets06.pdf)
As a result of these findings, SNAME has now taken the initiative to provide the
Ad Hoc Panel with $10,000 in seed funding, and thereby hopes to encourage the
Maritime Industry to match these funds to allow further study of the problems
associated with oily water separator design and operation. Click

PE Update
Taking
the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
Most PE licensing jurisdictions
require that applicants take and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)
exam in order to be eligible to take the PE license exam. The FE exam focuses
on undergraduate subjects including mathematics, engineering probability and
statistics, chemistry, computational skills, ethics and business practices,
engineering economics, engineering mechanics, strength of materials, material
properties, fluid mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and thermodynamics.
It is only logical, and proven by experience, that the best time to take the
FE examination is just after completing these undergraduate courses. Students
in EAC/ABET accredited engineering programs become eligible to take the exam
in their senior year. Many students during their senior terms believe they
are too busy to take the FE Exam. However, in hindsight, all who have told
us about their travails have said that they wished they had made the extra
effort during their senior year. We can only echo their sentiments.
The FE Exam
is prepared and scored by NCEES. The exam specification can be found at: www.ncees.org/exams/fundamentals/fe_exam_specs.pdf.
NCEES provides a Reference Handbook for use in the exam, thereby restricting
the number and type of references allowed in the examination room. No other
reference is allowed. FE Exam results are announced as PASS or FAIL.
NCEES has
updated its Calculator Policy as of November 15, 2005. Only approved calculators
listed below will be permitted in the exam room. No other models of calculators
or variations of the models listed below will be permitted.
- Hewlett
Packard – HP 30s, HP 33s, HP 9s
- Casio
– FX 115 ES, FX 115 MS, FX 115 MS Plus (Note: FX 115 ES and FX 115 MS
models ending with an "-SR" designation are also allowed.)
- Texas
Instruments – TI 30XA (or TI 30Xa), TI 30X IIS, TI 30X IIB, TI 36X Solar
For general
information about eligibility for the FE exam, go to: ELS-EXAMREG.org.
To contact license boards, go to www.ncees.org
and click on Licensing Boards. There is additional information available on
the NCEES web site including the latest news in the Licensure Exchange, a bimonthly
newsletter published by NCEES and distributed to licensing boards in the U.S.
and its jurisdictions.
Good luck
to all those taking the FE Exam this spring on Saturday, 22 April. Please note
that this is the day after the P.E. exam that takes place on Friday, 21 April.
If you have
any questions or comments about P.E. licensing, please email them to:
wmaclean@sname.org or dchapman@sname.org.
