PE Update
The Naval Architect and
Marine Engineer Professional Engineer Review Course for 2006 (PERC) is now
underway. It is not too late to sign-up as the main portion of the eleven-week
course is yet to come and the transcripts of missed sessions are available.
The third session is scheduled for 8-11 PM EST on February 1. Tuition is $500
for SNAME members and $650 for non-members. To register go to www.SNAMeLearning.org
or call Rich Mouk at SNAME Headquarters, (201) 798-4800, Ext 3044.
Over the last several months, we have received communications from members
in Massachusetts concerned that they might need to obtain their PE licenses
in NAME. Massachusetts was one of the states that was unsure if it would offer
the NAME exam to its applicants, but apparently that situation has changed.
One of our members has passed the NAME exam in Massachusetts. Massachusetts
apparently uses a company, Professional Credential Services to handle license
applications and examinations for its applicants. The URL for this organization
is:
www.pcshq.com/pcsweb/PCSCandPg.nsf/FNL/MAPEApplication/$file/PEApplicationupdated09152004.pdf
At this site, application
instructions and forms may be found for those wishing to become NAME licensees
in Massachusetts. On page 9 of the pdf, question 23, the NAME examination
is listed as Marine. Note that the application must be sent to Engineering
Examination Services/MA ENG, PO BOX 198689, Nashville Tennessee, 37219-8689.
This company also provides services for the jurisdictions of Iowa, New Jersey,
Puerto Rico, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. A telephone contact for PCS is: 877.ENG.EXAM,
or 615-880-4226.
The results of the recent PAK Survey have been put into a recommended revision
of the NAME Examination Specification, which has been further reviewed by
a group of SNAME PEs. The Examinations for Professional Engineers committee
of NCEES has been requested to approve the revised specification for implementation
in the 2008 NAME exam. More about this revision will be reported upon in future
PE Update columns.

Marine
Technology Error
The
January 2006 issue of SNAME News contained an omission of the concluding
sentence in the article on LNG. On page 42 this sentence should have
read:
"I
encourage this group to use venues like this Society for knowledge sharing
and technological innovation."

Brookings
Institution Issues Freight Report
The
Brookings Institution has issued a Transportation Reform Series paper
titled “Principles for a U.S. Public Freight Agenda in a Global
Economy.” The report is an excellent primer on the nature and importance
of freight mobility as well as freight trends and issues including the
changing global economy, longer, more complex and leaner supply chains,
port and route diversification, the rise of value-added warehousing, and
increasing community awareness of the importance of enhancing freight
mobility. It details the following elements to strengthen a national agenda
for freight: a systems approach; increased funding, innovative arrangements,
multi-agency relationships, private sector involvement, enhanced outreach,
and public education. The report is available on the web at: www.brookings.edu/metro/pubs/20060117_freightsystems.htm. |

Extraordinary Women Engineers
Save
the Date! February 21, 2006
Join
us at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, February
21, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. for a reception to celebrate the publication of
Changing Our World: True Stories of Women Engineers, the book
that inspired the Extraordinary Women Engineers Project. This event is
scheduled during National Engineers Week, chaired in 2006 by the Society
of Women Engineers.
Through
real-life stories, this full-color, 256-page book celebrates the contributions
of women engineers to every aspect of modern life. Publication of Changing
Our World represents a significant milestone for the Extraordinary Women
Engineers Project. When placed in school libraries and counseling centers,
the book will provide girls and their parents with a fresh new perspective
on engineering. The featured stories will also form the basis of educational
outreach resources scheduled for development in the next phase of the
project.
Coalition
partners are encouraged to use the book and its content in their own outreach
programs. To preview the book, visit www.engineeringwomen.org/
