2005 Scholarship Fund Raising Campaign
On March
1st, the SNAME Scholarship Committee will hold its regular meeting to award
Graduate Scholarships for the 2005-6 academic year and to consider requests
for the undergraduate scholarship program. As costs of higher education continue
to rise the Society has embarked on a new fund-raising campaign to allow significant
increases in the number and amount of the awards as well as an expansion of
the undergraduate program.
In addition
to the fund-raising appeal made in conjunction with the annual dues renewal
campaign, individual letters have been sent to previous scholarship awardees.
As of mid-January, fund raising has passed the halfway mark and the goal is
in sight. Members who have not yet sent in their contributions are reminded
to do so before the meeting date. There are more than twenty eager students
looking forward to a successful campaign.

600th
Anniversary of Cheng Ho's (Zheng He's)
Important Voyages of Discovery
|
|
Cheng Ho (also known as
Zheng He) was a Chinese admiral and explorer who led seven expeditions of
up to 300 ships beginning in 1405. There is evidence that one of these expeditions
landed on Mexican and California coasts. It is believed that the later 15th
century explorers, including Columbus, used charts derived from Cheng Ho's
(Zheng He's) important voyages of discovery.
Late last month in a presentation
at SNAME HQ Prof Jin Wu, of the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan,
described the status of projects in honor of the 600th anniversary of these voyages,
including research into the Chinese naval architecture, shipbuilding, and
navigation techniques of the period, all of which were well advanced.

CNRS Annual Conference
The Canadian
Nautical Research Society (CNRS) is pleased to choose Hamilton to host its 2005
Annual Conference Thursday, 16 June - Saturday, 18 June, on the theme "Rivers,
Lakes, Canals and the Sea".
The conference
will explore the patterns of development and exchange made possible by the relationship
between lakes, rivers, waterways and the sea. From the earliest communications
between peoples, the rise of states, naval power, industrialization and movement
of the world's resources, inland waterways have been a catalyst for political,
economic, and social development.
Papers and
panels falling within this broad theme are invited across the geography of the
northern hemisphere and from all time
periods up to the present day.
The conference
will be held at historic Dundurn Castle, run by the City of Hamilton, which
has ample parking, and the Admiral's Inn across the street is offering a special
conference rate with advance booking.
Papers presented
at the conference will be given first consideration for publication in the CNRS'
peer-reviewed journal The Northern Mariner.
The CNRS
is also pleased offer a small cash award to a graduate student presenting at
the conference, to defray travelling costs. Selection will be made on a competitive
basis. Please identify the university and programme of studies enrolled in when
submitting a paper proposal.
