Exciting News!

As a special added member benefit we are now moving
Section News to the SNAMeNewsLetter!

Because of the quarterly publication of Marine Technology and SNAME News, Section News would often be delivered to you in a less than timely fashion. Now we can place it in the eNewsLetter as soon as we receive it from the Sections (OK there might be a week’s time lapse) since the eNewsLetter is now twice monthly! In order to give members time to adjust, we will be putting all Section News for April in both the upcoming eNewsLetter and in Marine Technology. From then on it will conveniently arrive on your desktop for you to read at your leisure. Best of all, it will be archived on OUR website* and not YOUR bookshelves.

* All technical papers are also available online and archived there as well. Simply visit the home page and click on "journals online" to see all your subscriptions electronically.

Employment Outlook in the Shipbuilding Industry

The upcoming Gulf Section Meeting will feature a presenation by Susie Bush, TSC, Quality Technical Services, Inc. on the topic: Employment Outlook in the Shipbuilding Industry.

Summary: What does the future hold for employment opportunities for professionals in our U.S. Shipyards? Are our opportunities increasing or decreasing? What does it take to attract and retain top engineering and design talent?

These are some of the intriguing questions that ponder the minds of many hiring manager’s within U.S. Shipyards. Ms. Susie Bush, a marine staffing specialist, will be discussing in depth how to overcome obstacles in attracting and retaining top design and engineering talent.

We will also take a look at how staffing has changed over the past 20 years, how to minimize turnover, and finally we will also explore several cost effective staffing options for your immediate or upcoming projects that will actually save your companies money!

Pacific Northwest Section Newsletter

SNAME's Pacific Northwest Section not only has a new website, they also produce their own newsletter! The newsletter contains meeting notices, meeting notes, and other information regarding the section and it's activities. The most recent issue has a letter from the Section Chair, Chris Mulder, urging members to update their e-mail addresses on the SNAME site. We agree!

Congratulations to Stephanie Haaser, Section Webmaster, on a job well done.

The Winter 2004 issue of Making Waves (Bridget Brett, Editor) features an article on the special Student Program at the 2003 WMTC in San Francisco. Written by Mehgan Brogan, a member of the Student Steering Committee, the article discusses the success of the Student Congress and student competition. To quote Meghan, "The conference was its typical success including an extensive expo area showcasing a myriad of commercial vendors from the marine engineering and naval architectural fields."
