Membership Categories

We are leaving the January 1st survey question open – we have had a good number of responses, but want to be sure that everyone has had a chance to give an opinion. If you have questions or would like to send additional comments, please submit them to Nancy Ostin at nostin@sname.org.

The SNAME Executive Committee is considering a change to the bylaws that would eliminate the competence and experience requirements that distinguish the different grades of membership: Member and Associate Member. This would essentially reduce our membership categories to Fellow, Member, Affiliate, and Student. Would you support such a change?

Click here to participate in the survey.

New ISO Standard

The following draft ISO standard has been posted on the SNAME Subcommittee on Standards web site for downloading and review/comment. ISO DIS 28004 Security management systems for the supply chain — Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of supply chain security management systems (Apr 7, 2007). Comments should be forwarded to Mr. Howard Hime at the U.S. Coast Guard by the comment due date shown using address howard.l.hime@uscg.mil. A ballot/comment sheet for this purpose is available on the Subcommittee on Standards web site.

This and other draft ISO standards are available at:www.sname.org/committees/technical/standards/standards.htm and through the SNAME web site by selecting the Technical Committees link.

As you may recall, the Subcommittee's mission is to help SNAME members stay abreast of standards development activities that may be of interest and to facilitate participation in standards work through the review/comment process for developing the U.S. position on draft standards. For this reason, I urge you to forward this message to members of your committees who may be interested in the progress of these ISO standards.

Please let me know if you need other information or if you have questions.

~ Subscription Renewal ~

Once again, the time of year has come to subscribe to, or renew your subscription to SNAME’s Technical Journals. A brief description of each Journal is listed below:

  • Journal of Ship Production has influenced the worldwide development of ship production engineering. Each quarterly issue contains a well-rounded selection of technical papers relevant to ship professionals.
  • Journal of Ship Research provides access to highly technical papers on applied research in hydrodynamics, propulsion, ship motions, structures and vibrations. Many of these papers bear directly on disciplines outside ship and ocean science and engineering, such as civil and mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, and numerical analysis, making it a valuable tool to professionals in many fields.
  • SNAME’s Transactions, published annually since 1893, includes annual reports and papers presented at the Society’s Maritime Technology Conference & Expo and Ship Production Symposium, with discussions of the papers and authors’ closures.

Don’t miss out on the latest technology. Subscribe/Renew to these Journals now. If you have not renewed your dues yet, subscribe/renew with your dues renewal form or contact our Publications Sales Associate, Tommie-Anne Faix via e-mail, or call her directly at 201-499-5068. You can also subscribe/renew on our website. Members receive substantial discounts from the Non-member prices.

Engineers Week
February 18-24, 2007

This year, SNAME plans to begin an effort to increase awareness of marine and ocean engineering, and other marine science-related careers by taking advantage of the spotlight Engineers Week will shine on technical and engineering careers and education. Engineers Week is a coalition of engineering, professional and technical societies and corporations and government agencies, founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The purpose is to "ensure a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers among young students and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science."

As a SNAME member, you can participate in Engineers Week by contacting your local middle or high school and offer to make a presentation to science classes. Start with the Guidance Counselor, or the head of the Science or Math Department. Your section can develop a creative design competition geared towards kids, and SNAME HQ will help you publicize your efforts! If you need materials to utilize during your presentation, contact sgiver@sname.org for SNAME's Outreach DVD and brochures.

For additional Outreach presentation ideas for Engineer's Week, visit: www.eweek.org/index.shtml

NSRP Approves 16 Ship Production Panel Projects

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise has announced the selection of 16 new Ship Production Panel projects, totaling approximately $994,000, specifically designed to save money in Navy shipbuilding and ship repair. The Navy’s continued sponsorship of the program is a reflection of their ongoing commitment to cost reduction in building and maintaining the fleet.

The Ship Production Panels are subordinate to the Ship Production Committee, one of SNAME’s Technical and Research Committees, which consists of the Chairman supported by the Ship Production Panel Chairs, and selected others. The panels give SNAME access to a diverse group of U.S. shipbuilding and repair industry professionals. The Ship Production Committee provides an important link between the shipbuilding industry and SNAME.

PE Update

2007 PERC is up and running
Unit 1 Assignment is already posted!

A recent e-mail enquiry questioned as to whether it is too late to register. The answer is NO! - The PERC structure is ideal for study at your own pace. The Unit Assignments and Solutions are posted according to a schedule and the Online Sessions; once held, are recorded and made available as transcripts for later reference. So if you have a travel schedule to keep, all materials remain available for you to study on your return and at your own pace.

Course tuition remains $500 for SNAME members and is now $750 for non-members, making it advantageous to be or become a SNAME member (members who have let their membership lapse should renew their membership promptly and enjoy all of the member benefits).

In 2006 those who took the PERC had a pass rate significantly better that than those who did not, with a pass rate better than 90% while the others had a pass rate of 50% or less. The overall pass rate published by NCEES was 80%. In 2004 and 2005, the PERC registrant pass rate was 93%.

Register for 2007 PERC online at www.SNAMeLearning.org or contact Richard Mouk at SNAME Headquarters via e-mail at rmouk@sname.org or, by telephone at 201-499-5063. If you have other questions, please send them to Walter Maclean, wmaclean@sname.org or David Chapman at dchapman@sname.org. We will try to respond promptly.
