Membership
Categories
The
SNAME Executive Committee is considering a change to the bylaws
that would eliminate the competence and experience requirements
that distinguish the different grades of membership: Member
and Associate Member. This would essentially reduce our membership
categories to Fellow, Member, Affiliate, and Student. Would
you support such a change?

Website
Survey Reminder
As
a reminder, if you have not yet completed the Website User Survey,
please take a few minutes and respond today. This survey was
developed based upon member needs uncovered in the Member Value
Survey conducted earlier this year. That survey told us that
the website is an area of keen interest to our members. Consequently,
SNAME has embarked on a significant project to gather your perspectives
and needs on its use of the Web. Our goal in this project is
to define the organization’s web strategy and implement
the type of business tools, content, and Web functionality that
will make the SNAME website an indispensable resource for you.
To that end, we are inviting all SNAME members to participate
in an online survey that has been designed to collect your needs
and preferences for the website.
Please follow
the link that was provided to you via e-mail to participate
in the survey. If you have already participated, thank you and
please ignore this reminder. The survey should take about 15
minutes to complete. If you have comments or suggestions beyond
this survey, please contact us via email to Susan Giver, Marketing
and Communications Director : email - sgiver@sname.org.
We look forward to
receiving your input and hope that you will take a few minutes
this week to participate in this important effort. Thank you.

| Grand
Re-opening of
High-Speed Towing Tank at Stevens
SNAME
was represented at the grand re-opening of the Stevens Institute
of Technology and The Center for Maritime Systems’ re-commissioning
of the high-speed towing tank at the Davidson Laboratory December
11, 2006. A major force in maritime research since it opened
in 1944, the tank reopened this month after a 16-month expansion
project. The new capabilities will assist in the design of fast,
ships and boats for commerce, pleasure, and national defense.

Michael Bruno introducing the featured speakers at the Davidson
Laboratory’s towing tank re-commissioning. |
Now
66% larger, the new tank will be the “most advanced facility
of its kind in the United States,” said Hal Raveche, president
of Stevens. The increased size will allow the testing of bigger
models and more complex ocean behavior, with better viewing
areas and new capabilities for modeling the full complexity
of interactions between a ship and the ocean.

In
his speech to event attendees, Phil Kimball, SNAME’s Executive
Director remarked, “the newly re-commissioned high-speed
towing tank at Stevens will provide enhanced capability to support
this country’s vital efforts to maintain its lead in maritime
technology while supporting both our nation’s critical
defense base and its long heritage as a seafaring nation prominent
in world trade.”
