Professionalism and Professional Societies:
Some Thoughts from an Old Professional

Tom Lamb, in his acceptance speech upon being named Honorary Commodore of The Quarterdeck Society at the University of Michigan on April 15, 2005, focused on professionalism and professional societies. This theme was inspired by his concern for the apparent lack of interest or value in professionalism, involvement and support for our professional society, SNAME.

Tom asks the following questions:

What makes a profession and what is professionalism?
What distinguishes a healthy and successful profession?
Why do we need professional societies?
Why should NA and ME graduates be members of their professional society?
Why are we in this situation today?

Student Section Report

Memorial University of Newfoundland - The MUN Student Section of SNAME typically begins each academic semester with a section meeting. This year, the student section promoted SNAME among graduate students. During the fall semester, the student section hosted a meeting on October 7th and on November 10th, for undergraduate and graduate students in Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering (ONAE. Both meetings provided the students the opportunity to get together and mingle with their professors and learn more about SNAME. The second meeting, on November 10th, also provided the opportunity for graduate students to exchange information about their own work. After the meeting, graduate students and their professors decided to give monthly seminars in the future section meetings. Read more ...

Alert! Human Element Bulletin
Why regulation needs to be realistic

Regulation is important, while compliance with it is essential for safe ship operation. Violations of the rules and regulations account for many accidents. The latest issue of Alert!, the International Maritime Human Element Bulletin, focuses upon regulation, and concludes that while absolutely necessary, regulations need to be both realistic and practical. USCG Cutter Undergoing Small Boat
Launch-and-Recovery Model Tests

The US Coast Guard Deepwater Program’s Fast Response Cutter, which successfully completed its preliminary design review in mid-September, is undergoing a year-long series of model-tank tests. An area of special interest is the cutter’s design for a stern ramp for small boat launch-and-recovery operations, using free-floating models of the cutter and boat.

For an interesting article on the tests see www.uscg.mil/deepwater/pdf/December05Newsletter.pdf. Note also the related article and photograph on page 6 of the pdf.

PE Update

The 2006 Naval Architect/Marine Engineer Professional Engineer Review Course (PERC) is now up and running. All those planning to take the NAME P.E. Exam on Friday, April 21 should be signed up by now as the first Online Session of PERC is scheduled for Wednesday, January 18 at 8:00 PM EST. The course tuition remains at $500 for SNAME members and $650 for non-members, a real bargain if viewed in light of the 93% success rate for 2004 and 2005 course registrants. In addition to the regular course, a set of sample examination questions will be given to all registrants at the end of the course.

Based on the questions raised over the last several years (2002-2005), a set of Frequently Asked Questions is also offered to help registrants become more familiar with the exam and examination conditions. Each year the course is updated and expanded by the instructors to better assist the registrants in their preparations. A similarly high pass rate is anticipated for 2006.

To register on-line go to www.snamelearning.org and click on COURSE REGISTRATION and SIGN UP NOW. Then follow the step-by-step instructions. Alternatively, contact Rich Mouk at SNAME Headquarters by e-mail or by telephone at (201) 798-4800, Ext 3044.

If you have any special questions, please send them to Walter Maclean at: wmaclean@sname.org or macleanwalter@aol.com. Responses will be given as soon as possible.

Engineers Week promotes recognition among parents, teachers and students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science, and technology literacy, and motivates youths to pursue engineering careers in order to provide a diverse, vigorous and informed engineering workforce. Each year Engineers Week reaches thousands of schools, businesses, and community groups across the United States. Engineers Week programs and materials are accessible to those outside the U.S. as well. Engineers Week 2006 is co-chaired by the Society of Women Engineers and Northrop Grumman Corporation. I-95 Corridor Coalition -
Short Sea and Coastal Shipping Options

The Report of the Short Sea Shipping Study can be found at http://144.202.240.28/pman/ViewProject.asp?pid=185. This important study confirmed the importance of existing short-sea shipping operations throughout the I-95 Coalition region (US east coast), identified specific commodity types and traffic lanes, and revealed the important role that States and MPOs play in supporting short-sea shipping operations. With the distribution of this study, MARAD and the Coalition are committed to continue working together to build upon these initial findings by continuing to engage important short-sea shipping stakeholders in the region and by developing a more detailed understanding of how short-sea shipping fits within the region’s intermodal supply and distribution chain.
