Author's Inquiry for Biographical Information
on Dair Long

The author is working with the daughter of Dair Long, small draft designer responsible for the Fairliner line of pleasure craft after WW2. Earlier Dair designed the Harco 40'. He was assigned naval architect to PT 1 and 2, and rescue boats. He also did a number of military designs for the OSS that were classified. He later did sailboat, commercial, and crash boat conversions. One of the Fairliner 26' cruisers was selected as the camera boat to record the lift off speed and angle of the Spruce Goose for Howard Hughes. The author would appreciate any information in the form of recollections, design critique, photos, plans or other. For more details and author's contact information, click here.

PE Update

The time is fast approaching for the start of the 2006 NAME P.E. Review Course (PERC). This will be its fifth and further improved offering with ten experienced instructors. The start of the course is scheduled for January 9 and it is expected to be concluded on March 30. Tuition remains at $500 for SNAME Members and $650 for non-members. To register for the course, contact Richard Mouk at SNAME Headquarters at rmouk@sname.org, or call him at 1-800-798-2188, Ext 3044. Alternatively, sign up on-line by following the instructions at www.SNAMeLearning.org. Note that the pass rate for first-time takers has been 93% for the past two years. The three-hour on-line sessions with the unit instructors provide an open-ended question and answer period in addition to email responses to questions.

The site offers a course tour and answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). It is expected that there will be about 35-40 registrants for this year's course, so don't delay. Those who registered previously and wish to retake the course may do so by reregistering; there will be no added costs for doing so. As was done last year, it is planned that at the end of the course the Sample Exam will be provided for all to test their knowledge and skills. The sample exam conforms to the exam specification and is in the exam format, but it does not contain questions that have been on past examinations or are planned for future exams.

If there are questions regarding the NAME P.E. exam, please email them to Walter Maclean at wmaclean@sname.org or macleanwalter@aol.com.

Suggestions invited for Super Yacht Technical Session
at SNAME Marine Technology Conference

With the increasing sophistication and size of the super yacht industry, some members have gained substantial experience at the cutting edge of large yacht design, production, or operation through their own practice. Since the 2006 annual meeting is in Fort Lauderdale, and a small vessel emphasis would be appropriate, the Society's Small Craft Committee is considering a session specifically involving large yachts. The specific issues that might be of special interest in this field (in addition to concerns in common with all ships of this size) might include motion controls, regulation issues, structural analysis, shipyard productivity, advanced concepts, and economic issues. At this early date the format of this session can be adapted to suit the content, perhaps a panel discussion to find areas of common ground where SNAME could help the builders and designers, or perhaps a special track with presentations and papers. Please send drafts, suggestions, or thoughts to the Small Craft Committee Chairman Chris Barry at Chris.D.Barry@uscg.mil.

President Compton Reports on
Chesapeake Section Student Event

I am pleased to report on my first “visit with our students” that I promised at the Student Summit in October. When Justin Stepanchick – chair of Virginia Tech section suggested to Chesapeake chair Paul Cojeen that the Section’s regular technical meeting on Tuesday, December 6 could also be used as a road trip to Washington – for a student event – I agreed immediately to join their event. In spite of a snowstorm on the East Coast on Monday night, the meeting happened, and what an excellent session it was!!

The event started just after 4:00. Introductions included ASNE Executive Director, Dennis Kruse (Dennis was filling in for ASNE President Rick Hepburn, who was not able to attend, as he was sick), and Justin Stepanchick, Chair of the VPI&SU Section, and Midn 1/C Drew Perciballi, Chair of the Naval Academy Section. One never knows how an interactive group meeting will turn out, but this went very well; it was a truly interactive conversation. There were 16 students and the same numbers from Chesapeake and ASNE Flagship sections.

VT Student Section Members (L-R): President Compton, Timothy Lynch, Justin Baity, Greg Roach, Joe Schaeffer, Mathew Witchgers, James Shultz, Bobby Neese, Frank Easthman, Section Chair Justin Stepanchick, Nate Reimold, John Wilde, Desta Amalyou, Ronda Yon and ASNE Executive Director Dennis Kruse

You will have read about Matt Unger, the chair of the SSC (Student Steering Committee) and the Student Summit he organized on Saturday morning in Houston. All of us who attended that session are now focused on the student member/retention/benefits issues. One of the suggestions from the Summit was that student sections should “spend some time” with their “parent” section. That is just what Justin Stepanchick brought into action.

National Engineers Week

Engineers Week, a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies, is dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers’ positive contributions to our quality of life. Engineers Week promotes recognition among parents, teachers and students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science, and technology literacy, and motivates youths to pursue engineering careers in order to provide a diverse, vigorous and informed engineering workforce. Each year Engineers Week reaches thousands of schools, businesses, and community groups across the United States. Engineers Week programs and materials are accessible to those outside the U.S. as well. Engineers Week 2006 is co-chaired by the Society of Women Engineers and Northrop Grumman Corporation.

SNAME, with members throughout the country and the world, can make an important contribution to Engineers Week by getting involved. SNAME Members can provide an important contribution to this effort just by lending their expertise to their local communities. Just add your name to the national Engineering Contacts list, maintained by the Engineering Week nonprofit organization.

By adding your name to the Engineering Contacts list, you are making engineering and your expertise available to your community. Your participation will help uncloak the "stealth profession" and could inspire hundreds of people in your community to learn more about engineering and the impact it has on their daily lives. You should expect to receive calls from other engineers looking to broaden the reach of their planned events, as well as calls from teachers looking for volunteers to come into classrooms, and everything in between.
